Terms of employment: Contract

Duration of Contract: one year with possible extension

Duty Station: Ethiopian Public Health Institute, Addis Ababa 

The Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) is a technical arm of the Federal Ministry of Health of Ethiopia responsible to conducting research in public health, Non communicable disease, and Food safety and Hygiene. Currently, the Institute is conducting various researches in nutrition and public health including the implementation of Food safety master plan (FSMP). The Institute is closely working with food safety implementing sectors and development partners’ to make all program decision evidence based. In view of this, EPHI would like to recruit Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) Expert who will support the work of the Institute. The incumbent will closely work, facilitate, and liaise with assigned experts at EPHI and other stakeholders.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The Food safety management system – ISO 22,000:2018 and HACCP) Expert at the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) will primarily focus on ensuring food safety through the implementation of the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) system in some selected Agro processors and catering servicesin Ethiopia.

 Key responsibilities include:

  1. HACCP Plan Development and implementation: Develop and implement comprehensive HACCP plans for different Agri-food industries and catering services to enhance food safety by Identifying potential biological, chemical, and physical hazards in food production and processing.

  2. Monitoring Critical Control Points (CCPs): Establish and monitor critical control points (CCPs) in food production processes to mitigate identified risks. Ensure that CCPs are managed and maintained effectively according to national and international food safety standards.

  3. Training and Capacity Building: Provide technical guidance and training to food handlers, inspectors, and other stakeholders on HACCP principles and their application. Develop educational materials to support ongoing training in HACCP-related procedures.

  4. Collaboration and Coordination: Work closely with various stakeholders including the Federal Ministry of Health, Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority, and food safety implementing sectors, and development partners to ensure coordinated efforts in food safety measures. Assist in the implementation of the Food Safety Master Plan (FSMP) and other related initiatives in collaboration with local and international partners.

  5. Research and Reporting: Conduct research and analyze data related to food safety risks, providing recommendations for improvements based on scientific evidence. Prepare and present periodic reports to senior management and stakeholders regarding HACCP activities and outcomes.

  6. Audit and Compliance: Conduct regular audits to ensure that food safety systems meet the required standards. Ensure compliance with national and international food safety regulations, including standards set by Codex Alimentarius.

  7. Network with ministry of health, Ethiopian food and drug authority and partners  

  8. Support other related activities as needed by the directorate.

  9. Actively participate in other activities of the Institute.

    Monitoring and Reporting 

    The Expert will work from EPHI which will arrange for workstation. The position holder is expected to provide written report of his performance monthly and progress will be monitored including through periodic briefs/updates.

    Duration

    The position holder will be engaged for a total of 6 months with possible extension

    Salary 

    As per Institute scale.

Job Requirements

  • A Post-graduate degree in Food safety, food microbiology, Microbiology, Food technology, Food science and above  with a specialization relevant to the above job description/tasks

  • Experience in research publication, at least one published paper as a first author

  • Excellent written experience in implementation of Food safety management system – ISO 22,000:2018 

  • A minimum work experience of 10 yrs for BSc, 8 yrs for MSc and 6yrs for PhD in HACCP implementation applied to Agro-processors and catering services.

  • Written Experiences of conducting HACCP verification activities in Ethiopia within the role of Controlling Authority (CA) inspection duties

  • Proven track record with significant experience in HACCP IMPLEMENTATION in at least three Agri-processing Or catering service industries

  • Experience in developing HACCP and SPS related procedure manuals, documents and guidance materials for CAs and private sector/industry 

  • Proven track record with significant experience in Ethiopian Food system

  • Be familiar with local and international research ethics 

  • Be able to use statistical software such as Stata, 

  • Experience working with/knowledge about existing food safety, food and nutrition, health policies, the Ethiopian health sector development program strategies and plans and the health system strengthening activities of the country  

  • Professional demeanor, in a professional office setting

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills

  • Ability to discuss corrective actions and past experiences
