Job Description

For more than 40 years, Médecins du Monde (MdM), a campaigning medical organization committed to international solidarity, has been caring for the most vulnerable populations here and abroad. It has continued to bear witness to obstacles that exist in accessing healthcare and has secured sustainable improvements in health-for-all policies.

Those working for this independent organization do not solely dispense care and treatment but condemn violations of human dignity and rights and fight to improve matters for populations living in precarious situations.

MdM France currently works in 30 countries across all continents to facilitate access to healthcare through 6 political battles:

MdM France has been working in Ethiopia since 1986 in different types of projects from long-term interventions to emergency response. MdM France has concentrated its efforts on projects related to basic access to primary healthcare (projects centered on rural health facilities and isolated populations), reduction of maternal mortality through improved quality of obstetric care, promotion of Sexual and Reproductive Health rights including protection against Gender-Based Violence, provision of Mental Health and Psycho-Social support (MHPSS) and reduction of malnutrition.

Main Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the desk manager, you are responsible for the overall management of the Ethiopia mission.

Your main responsibilities are the following:

  • Recruit, manage, train, and motivate the mission’s team

  • Define the operational and advocacy strategy together with the coordination team, the desk manager, and the volunteer board delegates of the mission

  • Plan and monitor activities, implement corrective action when necessary, providing technical support to the team

  • Represent MdM with authorities, local actors, partners, donors and the media

  • Monitor partnership agreements with partners, authorities, and donors, seek out and develop new partnerships, and ensure or supervise fundraising

  • Ensure the financial coverage of the mission by leading fundraising and budget management

  • Draft, adap,t and monitor safety regulations and procedures and coordinate crisis management in the region

  • Implement and monitor the application of MdM’s programmatic and support services framework, policies, and procedures

  • Supervise reporting to MdM and donors

Job Requirements

  • Higher education in Project Management or Humanitarian aid, Development, Public health, or related fields (five years post-secondary education)

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the humanitarian sector in a similar position (General Coordinator, Country Director, Deputy-Country Director)

  • Substantial experience in safety and security management, including in volatile context

  • Significant experience in risk analysis and access strategies development

  • Experience with Primary Health Care / SRH / SGBV / Sex Work / Harm reduction programs is an asset

  • Strong leadership skills and a supportive management style: solid experience in supervision and management of a large expatriate and national team

  • Strategic vision, ability to understand national and regional strategies and to negotiate with donors and the authorities

  • Capacity to build, manage, and follow a budget

  • Excellent communication, diplomatic, and representation skills

  • Strong problem-solving and organizational skills, capacity to work autonomously & under pressure

  • Previous experience in Ethiopia is an asset

  • Fluency in English (C1-C2) is mandatory, and knowledge of French is an asset

  • Good command of Microsoft Office Suite

Benefits

  • Starting date: as soon as possible

  • 12-month contract

  • Gross monthly salary: €3,964

  • Position based in Addis Ababa with regular field visits to sites of intervention or assessment

  • A premium equal to one month's salary paid in two installments – a minimum of 6 months seniority required

  • Expatriation bonus (10% gross salary per month)

  • Transportation costs, vaccines, and visas covered

  • Guesthouse housing (NOT a family position)

  • 22.5 recovery days per year

  • 5 weeks of paid leave per year

  • Health insurance (50% covered by MdM and 50% by the employee)
