Job Description
The Centre Manager supports the Country Director in leading operations at EnsessaKotteh, Born Free’s Wildlife Rescue, Conservation and Education Centre in Ethiopia. The role supports Centre operations by ensuring operational continuity, that existing infrastructure is maintained, overseeing day-to-day implementation of new infrastructure, providing input to annual budgeting and monthly forecasting, regular reporting on Centre activities, plus reporting and gathering content (e.g. stories and photos) to be used to engage BFF audiences and donors. The Centre Manager should be familiar with all BFFE protocols and policies, as well as Born Free Foundation (UK) protocols and policies, as relevant.
Objectives
Ensure all staff maintain the highest standards of work including in relation to safety and security protocols (including Born Free’s Safeguarding Policy) to ensure their wellbeing and welfare.
Support the Centre Veterinary team with the oversight of animal welfare protocols, as agreed.
In consultation with the Country Director ensure that BFE complies with all Ethiopian labour laws and our own personnel and operational policies at the Centre.
Provide oversight of the day-to-day management of construction of new infrastructure in coordination with the Country Director and Technical Officer.
Ensure scheduled site maintenance is undertaken as planned and to a high standard, ensuring safety of staffs and animals at all times.
When requested, contribute to the development of the annual operating budget and the monthly forecasts, ensuring they are realistic and not over or understated.
Work with the Administration and Security Supervisor and the Finance and Administration Manager (based in the Addis office) to cross-check and approve staff records, including staff attendance.
Work closely with the Country Director to support team capacity-building through identifying and organizing agreed staff training.
Coordinate the staff health programme, including arranging annual inoculations and health checks as needed, with support from the Centre Technical Officer.
Draft Biannual and Annual Reports for EWCA and the Authority for Civil Society Organizations with input from the Centre team, Country Director (Ethiopia) and Head of Rescue and Care (UK).
Inform the development of, and ensure adherence to, various protocols including, but not limited to, personnel health and safety, staff training and capacity building.
Coordinate regular safety drills as per site and animal related protocols.
Provide information to the Animal Rescue and Care Manager (in the UK) to support fundraising and communications lead from the UK.
Skills and Personal Attributes:
Excellent organizational skills and ability to delegate and a good team leader.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel and Word. Knowledge of Microsoft Teams would be useful, but training can be provided.
Excellent attention to detail, an aptitude for problem-solving and self-directed learning.
Excellent interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity; ability to develop positive relationships with others and demonstrate sensitivity to the thoughts of people from different cultural backgrounds.
Resilience and the ability and willingness to work in an isolated location in a challenging environment.
The ability to work alone and effectively as part of a team from a range of cultural backgrounds.
Capability and patience to deal with protracted bureaucracy.
Willingness to learn, use own initiative, and take on new challenges.
A good level of physical fitness.
A willingness to work weekends and Public Holidays and around priorities as they occur.
Fluent in written and spoken Amharic and English.
Full driving license and willingness to drive in Ethiopia.
Education and Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in management and leadership discipline (or other relevant discipline) from a recognized University
Knowledge and Experience:
Minimum 7 years’ experience of operational management in Ethiopia
Experience and knowledge of buildings and facilities maintenance and repair work
Experience of working collaboratively with a large multi-disciplinary and multi-ethnic team in a challenging environment.
Experience writing Project Plans and Project Reports for external stakeholders.
Experience in gathering and presenting content for storytelling and fundraising purposes.
Experience with staff capacity building and training.
Experience of managing a complex budget.
Knowledge and understanding of animal welfare and familiarity with animal husbandry practices.
