About Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI)
The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) is a medical research institute established in 1970 by the Government of Ethiopia in collaboration with Save the Children Organizations of Norway and Sweden, and University of Bergen. It was named after the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae). ARHI was initially established to investigate the pathogenesis and human immune responses of leprosy. However, it undertakes medical research in a wide range of diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria, antimicrobial resistance, HIV various cancers, and other non-communicable conditions. The Institute focuses on responding to emerging and re-emerging diseases through health research and innovation. In addition, the Institute also places due emphasis on research on communicable and non-communicable diseases. The research activities are organized and carried out under seven Research Directorates.
Background and purpose of the vacancy:
AHRI in collaboration with local and international partners is planning to undertake a project entitled " Impact of a cryptosporidiosis point-of-care test-and-treat strategy in children with diarrhoea (CryptoT&T) ". The project is funded by the Global Health (GH) European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) 3 and is a collaboration between partners in Ethiopia, Norway and Mozambique. We are looking for a data manager for effective data management and implementation. The data manager will work in collaboration with the project PI, work package lead and the project staff at AHRI as well as in the field and will coordinate all data management project activities. The Data Manager will be based at the Communicable and Non-Communicable Diseases Research Directorate (CNCDRD).
Establishing and maintaining central database
Coordinates data management activities for the project: receiving, batching, cleaning, and merging data from different sources.
Coordinates with data management teams across international partners
Flags data quality issues periodically (i.e. daily/bi-weekly) to PI and completes regular data management reports.
Adapts the electronic data collection instrument in an effective and feasible manner to support the data collection.
Collects and aggregates data sets for analysis as well as creating new data sets of summary statistics.
Involves in dataset preparation, assists data analysis, and assists in report compiling.
Cleaning data and methodically assessing its quality before analysis.
Merging data sets or creating new data sets for analysis.
Creating or deriving new variables from existing data sets.
Labeling variables and ensuring that they are accurately described.
Assessing the distribution of variables so that the most appropriate statistical tests are applied.
Analyzing data using statistical software such as STATA or R by applying the most appropriate and robust statistical methods and sampling weights.
Creating, annotating, and maintaining syntax files of analysis that records all changes made to variables and the statistical procedures applied so that they can be checked and repeated.
Is responsible for the validation of double-entered data files.
Ensures that data are properly stored and backed up.
Checks validated data files regularly for systematic errors.
Contributes to the analysis of results.
Liaises with the data collection co-ordinator on a regular basis.
Reports without delay any problems encountered in data management.
Qualifications:
Master's degree in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Health Informatics, Computer science (with training in statistics) or related field.
Minimum of 6 years of experience out of which 4 years as a data manager.
Proven track record of successfully managing complex projects in low-resource settings.
Strong understanding of statistics and data management.
Proven expertise and experience with REDCap.
Expertise and experience in STATA, R, Python and other programming languages.
Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) is a plus
Proficiency in data management software and Microsoft Office Suite.
Additional experience of software development/website development and management is desired.
Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
Ability to work under stress and in a team and willingness to travel to field sites as required.
Willingness to take other non-project related activities as required.
