Job Description

The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was founded in 1970 through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations seconded by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. The Institute got its name from the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae). AHRI reorganized by the decree of the Council of Minister’s Regulation No. 530/2023 with the objectives of conducting biomedical, clinical trial and bioequivalence research, promoting and strengthening local production of pharmaceutical products and research capacity building under the Federal Ministry of Health. AHRI, over its 50 years in service, is well known for its hub function for skill and technology transfer and partnership embracing research agendas with direct impact in the development and transformation of population in Ethiopia and beyond.

The Junior Researcher – Research Communication Officer will play a key role in disseminating research findings to diverse audiences, including policymakers, practitioners, and the public. This role involves crafting clear and engaging communication materials, managing outreach activities, and supporting the research team in enhancing the visibility and impact of their work.

The Knowledge Translation Division is one of the key departments within the institute. It is responsible for translating research findings into policies and practices and providing support to AHRI researchers, program managers, policymakers, and the Ministry of Health (MOH). To strengthen its mission, the Knowledge Translation Division is seeking a self-driven, motivated, innovative, and energetic Junior Researcher – Research Communication Officer to join our dynamic team.

Key Duties and Responsibilities             

  • Translate complex research findings into accessible formats such as policy briefs, reports, blogs, and infographics.

  • Develop communication strategies to ensure research findings reach target audiences effectively.

  • Organize and facilitate workshops, seminars, and conferences to share research outcomes.

  • Create and manage content for various platforms, including websites, social media, and newsletters.

  • Coordinate with the media to promote research projects and publications.

  • Maintain a repository of communication materials, ensuring easy access and usability.

  • Collaborate with researchers, partners, and stakeholders to identify key messages and target audiences.

  • Build and maintain relationships with media outlets, policymakers, and other relevant stakeholders.

  • Act as a liaison between the research team and external audiences to facilitate knowledge exchange.

  • Assist in drafting and editing research proposals, reports, and manuscripts.

  • Support data visualization and presentation for research outputs.

  • Provide administrative and logistical support for research and communication-related activities.

Job Requirements

Qualifications and Competences

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field.

  • A Master's degree in Social Work is highly desirable and will be considered an added advantage.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and concisely.

  • Experience in content creation and management for various platforms.

  • Familiarity with research processes and the ability to synthesize and communicate findings effectively.

  • Proficiency in graphic design and data visualization tools is a plus.

  • Excellent organizational and project management skills.

  • Strong interpersonal and networking skills.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

  • Attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work.

  • Enthusiasm for communicating research that has societal impact.

Duty station: Addis Ababa AHRI Head Office

Number required for each position: 1 (One)

Terms of employment: one year contract period with full time employment basis with possibility of extension based on performance and budget availability

Salary: As per the institute salary scale
