Position Title: Communications Officer
Location: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Reports To: Communications and Media Manager
Contract Type: Full-time
Salary: Commensurate with experience
Position Overview
The Communications officer in collaboration with the Communication Manager and SLT will lead the development and execution of Imagine1day Ethiopia’s communications strategy. This position will support internal and external communications, media relations, digital marketing, brand management, and public relations to enhance the visibility and impact of the organization’s programs. The Communications officer will work closely with the leadership team to ensure that Imagine1day’s mission, vision, and programmatic successes are effectively communicated to various stakeholders, including donors, partners, communities, and the general public.
1. Communications Strategy Development and Execution
Support Communications Strategy development: Create and implement a comprehensive communications strategy aligned with Imagine1day Ethiopia’s organizational goals and program priorities.
Brand Management: Ensure consistent branding, messaging, and positioning of the organization across all platforms, maintaining a unified voice that reflects the mission and values of Imagine1day.
Support Public Relations and Media Relations: Build and maintain relationships with journalists, media outlets, and influencers. Pitch stories, write press releases, and secure media coverage to raise awareness of Imagine1day’s work.
2. Content Creation and Management
Create Compelling Content: Develop high-quality content for various communication channels, including newsletters, blog posts, social media, annual reports, and program updates.
Storytelling: Collect and curate stories from the field, highlighting the impact of Imagine1day’s programs on communities and children. Use stories to convey emotional and compelling narratives to engage donors, partners, and the public.
Multimedia Production: Oversee the creation of multimedia content (photos, videos, infographics) to support campaigns, presentations, and online communication efforts.
3. Digital Communications and Social Media
Social Media Strategy: Develop and manage the organization’s social media strategy, increasing engagement and follower growth on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube.
Website Management: Oversee the organization’s website, ensuring it is up-to-date, user-friendly, and a central hub for all Imagine1day’s communications and content.
Email Campaigns and Newsletters: Manage email communications, including donor updates, newsletters, and special campaigns. Write, design, and send regular email communications to various stakeholder groups.
4. Internal Communications and Team Collaboration
Internal Communication Systems: Develop internal communication strategies that keep staff informed and engaged with organizational goals, updates, and initiatives.
Cross-Departmental Collaboration: Work closely with the fundraising, program, and advocacy teams to align communications with organizational priorities and ensure that messaging is integrated and consistent across all departments.
5. Advocacy and Stakeholder Engagement
Public Awareness Campaigns: Lead communications efforts for public awareness campaigns related to education, gender equality, youth empowerment, and Imagine1day’s core programs.
Advocacy Support: Support advocacy efforts by crafting clear and compelling messages for policymakers, donors, and key stakeholders, ensuring that Imagine1day’s advocacy work is well-supported and understood by target audiences.
6. Media and Crisis Management
Crisis Communication: Develop and implement crisis communication plans to address any issues that may arise, protecting the organization’s reputation and maintaining stakeholder trust.
Monitor Media Coverage: Track media coverage and public sentiment regarding the organization, responding to inquiries and proactively addressing any issues or misconceptions.
7. Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting
Impact Measurement: Monitor the effectiveness of communication campaigns, using analytics tools to track engagement, media coverage, website traffic, and social media performance.
Reporting and Feedback: Provide regular reports on communications activities, campaigns, and media relations efforts to the Executive Director and other senior leadership, suggesting improvements and adjustments to strategies as necessary.
• Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field. A Master’s degree is a plus.
Experience:
• At least 5-7 years of experience in communications, media relations, or public relations, preferably in the nonprofit or development sector.
• Proven experience in managing digital communications, social media platforms, and content creation.
• Strong background in brand management, public relations, and storytelling.
Skills:
• Exceptional Writing Skills: Ability to write clearly, concisely, and persuasively across various formats (e.g., press releases, reports, social media posts).
• Digital Savvy: Strong understanding of social media platforms, website management, and digital marketing strategies.
Project Management: Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Media Relations: Experience in pitching stories, working with the media, and managing press inquiries.
• Multimedia Proficiency: Comfort in creating and overseeing multimedia content, including video, photography, and infographics.
• Cross-Cultural Sensitivity: Experience working in diverse cultural settings and understanding of local Ethiopian contexts, challenges, and opportunities in education.
