About SHAMIDA Ethiopia:

SHAMIDA is a local non-governmental organization dedicated to improving the lives of vulnerable children and women in Ethiopia through various development programs. 

Position Overview:

We are seeking for a dedicated and experienced Child Protection Officer to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for implementing and managing child protection programs aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of children in the Shamida Shelter.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Take part in strategic discussions on programs and projects related to child protection planning. 

  • Assist in the planning, development, and revision of child protection programs; guarantee complete data for policy advocacy, development, and intervention; and establish goals, tactics, and plans for execution.

  • Provide technical guidance and operational support to government counterparts, NGO partners on interpretation, application and understanding of Shamida policies, strategies, processes and best practices and approaches on child protection and related issues 

  • Draft or review policy papers, briefs and other strategic program materials for management use, information and/or consideration.

  • Provide Child Protection orientation to all new staff members and volunteers as soon as possible after they begin work.

  • Provide Guards and Nannies with ongoing Child Protection refresher training quarterly and work with them to ensure that the children are protected.

  • Facilitate a Child protection discussion point at the staff meeting each week.

  • Act as a focal point to receive information on child abuse and access the information and make a prompt response. 

  • Assess possible risks in order to provide the protection.

  • Listening to and receiving child protection concerns from both children and adults and other staff members.

  • Ensure that all information is recorded on incident record forms.

  • Organize the Children’s Parliament each month.

  • Complete the Monthly Child Protection Report and send to the General Manager and copy the concerned management staffs.

  • Complete a Child Protection review every 6 months.

  • Organizing documents accurately and filling incident forms and reporting to the Child Protection Committee if necessary.

  • In a case of abuse whilst the child is in our care, making sure that the child receives appropriate services and support and coordinating the management of the case through referrals and other structures.   

  • Make sure delivery of life-skills lessons to all children that regularly cover child protection issues.

  • Develop and maintain strong partnerships with government, national stakeholders, and global partners to enhance capacity, exchange knowledge, and promote cooperation for sustainable child protection outcomes.

  • Engage in discussion and planning on child protection and similar matters, either as a participant or on behalf of Shamida, in order to work with the appropriate stakeholders.

  • Maintain current, conduct research, establish benchmarks, and put best practices in child protection information systems and management into practice. Evaluate, codify, and disseminate best practices and acquired information.

  • Participate in the creation and execution of policies and processes to guarantee the highest level of effectiveness and efficiency for sustainable projects and programs.

  • Plan and carry out capacity development activities to improve stakeholders' and clients' capabilities in order to support long-term outcomes for child protection and related projects/programs.

Salary and compensation

  • Negotiable based on experience, qualifications and organisation scale. 

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social work, Sociology, Psychology, or a related field.

  • Minimum of 2-3 years of work experience in the NGO sector that works on vulnerable children’s is a plus.

  • Excellent analytical skills with attention to detail.

  • Strong communication skills in both written and spoken English.

Skills

  • Proven experience in designing and implementing training programs

  • Strong knowledge of international child protection guidelines and standards.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
