Job Description
ECA's mission is to deliver ideas and actions for an empowered and transformed Africa; informed by the 2030 SDGs and Agenda 2063. The mission is guided by ECA's five new strategic directions which are: advancing ECA's position as a premier knowledge institution that builds on its unique position and privilege to bring global solutions to the continent's problems and take local solutions to the continent; developing macroeconomic and structural policy options to accelerate economic diversification and job creation; designing and implementing innovative financing models for infrastructure, and for human, physical and social assets for a transforming Africa; contributing solutions to regional and transboundary challenges, with a focus on peace security and social inclusion as an important development nexus; advocating Africa's position at the global level and developing regional responses as a contribution to global governance issues. This position is in the Publications & Conference Management Section (PCMS) within the Publications Conference and Knowledge Management Division (PCKMD) in the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), Addis Ababa Ethiopia.
Under the general supervision of the Head of the Production Services, and the direct supervision of the printing supervisor of the Unit, he/she will be responsible for the following duties:
•Under the supervision of the Team Leader, Digital Press, organizes and co-coordinates the work of a particular shift with a view to ensuring the timely production of official documents and publications.
•Ensures digital printing equipment, multi-color printing machine(s), single-color printing machine(s) and other print finishing machines are operated in accordance with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Takes responsibility for identifying hazardous tasks/operations in accordance with the guidelines set out in the SOPs.
•Interfaces, as required, with the Front Desk, desktop publishers and graphic designers to ensure a complete understanding of the job.
•Distributes assignments so as to ensure efficient and effective processing of documentation and an equitable distribution of work.
•Maintains daily statistics. Performs related administrative work as required. •Receives jobs in a variety of formats, e.g. PDF or native file (Adobe Creative Cloud).
•Performs all digital printing equipment operator functions as noted in the job specifications.
•Maintains knowledge of safety requirements of job and equipment, and ensures the safe, effective and efficient operation of equipment to the highest industry standards and as noted in the job specifications including following the ISO 14001-2015 procedures in waste management and disposal..
•Maintains a clean and well-organized work area. •Informs supervisor of equipment problems, and co-ordinates with manufacturer/vendor for repairs, as needed.
•Operates finishing equipment attached to digital printing equipment. •Performs operator level troubleshooting and maintenance on the digital printing equipment in accordance with manufacturer/vendor’s specifications. •Assures smooth continuity with respect to consecutive shifts. Prioritizes work to be continued and gives special instructions as needed.
•Trains more junior staff in operation of equipment and work-flow procedures.
•Performs supervisory functions in the absence of the team leader.
•Rotates in shifts, as well as weekend on-call duties, as needed.
•Depending on the needs of the service, availability for overtime is expected.
•Assists with the collection and analysis of data as well as preparation of data presentations and reports for information sharing, responding to queries, knowledge management, planning and decision making.
•Assists with visualizations and updating information material such as web pages or brochures. •Performs other related work as required.
Education
High school diploma or equivalent. A bachelor's degree in publishing, digital printing, management/business administration or related fields is desirable.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in production environment or digital printing is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to five (5) for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher. Knowledge of documents management workflow and advanced repair and maintenance are desirable. 1 year or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
Language
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
