About Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) 

The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) is a medical research institute established in 1970 by the Government of Ethiopia in collaboration with Save the Children Organizations of Norway and Sweden, and University of Bergen. It was named after the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae). ARHI was initially established to investigate the pathogenesis and human immune responses of leprosy. However, it undertakes medical research in a wide range of diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria, antimicrobial resistance, HIV various cancers, and other non-communicable conditions. The Institute focuses on responding to emerging and re-emerging diseases through health research and innovation. In addition, the Institute also places due emphasis on research on non-communicable diseases vaccine research and development and traditional and modern medicine. The research activities are organized and carried out under seven Research Directorates. 

Background and purpose of the vacancy:

AHRI in collaboration with local and international partners is planning to undertake a project entitled " Impact of a cryptosporidiosis point-of-care test-and-treat strategy in children with diarrhoea (CryptoT&T) ". The project is funded by the Global Health (GH) European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) 3 and is a collaboration between partners in Ethiopia, Norway and Mozambique.  We are looking for bionformatician to help analyze genomic and metagenomic sequence data. The bionformatician will be based at the Communicable and Non-Communicable Diseases Research Directorate (CNCDRD).

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Developing and maintaining custom analysis pipelines and scripts.

  • Data processing, alignment, and variant calling.

  • Statistical analysis and data visualization

  • Interpretation of genetic variations and providing insights. 

  • Collaboration with wet-lab scientists for experimental design.

  • Perform data analysis and interpretation of complex datasets

  • Analyze and interpret biological data from Next Generation Sequencing in different sequencing plafroms

Job Requirement:

  • MSc in Bioinformatics OR 

  • BSc in Bioinformatics and two years of experience.

  • Strong programming skills (R and Python)

  • Highly organized, able to handle multitasks and oversee several tasks simultaneously

  • Initiatives for teamwork, team formation and leadership

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills

  • Fluent in English Languages, both verbal and written

  • Strong attention to detail and problem solving-skills

  • Ability to work with others/teamwork, including international collaborators

  • Willingness to take on additional assignments given by the PI, project team memebers and the institution.

Duty station: Addis Ababa AHRI Head Office

Number required: 1 (One)

Terms of employment: one year contract period with full time employment basis with possibility of extension based on performance and budget availability

Salary: As per the scale of the institution.
