The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Delegation in Ethiopia is looking to hire an experienced, highly motivated and qualified person to fill the position of Mechanic based in Addis Ababa with frequent field trips.
Terms of Employment: 1 year fixed term contract with possibility of extension
The Mechanic carries out preventive maintenance and repairs on ICRC vehicles and other logistics equipment in accordance with guidelines from headquarters and manufacturers’ recommendations.
Repairs and maintains ICRC vehicles, generators & other logistic assets mainly independently.
Strictly follows safety instructions in carrying out routine works.
Assists other Mechanics on complex maintenance cases.

General Duties

Understands the roles of the components of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement

Represents the ICRC in a professional manner at all times

Performs all duties with the highest level of confidentiality in the interest of the employees and the ICRC
May be asked to perform tasks not covered in this job description and to provide support to other departments when necessary
Accountabilities and Responsibilities
Carries out repairs on trucks, light vehicles, generators, forklifts, and other ICRC mechanical equipment and takes part in welding, body repairs and painting as required.
Carries out preventative maintenance on ICRC vehicles, pumps, and generators, to internal and/or the manufacturer's specifications.
Ensures that all service and repair forms are correctly filled out and forwarded for all jobs carried out.
Ensures that spare parts and consumables stocks are kept at the agreed levels; takes part in placing orders for spare parts and equipment as required.
Ensures that technical and personal security standards are followed as regards their work.
Assists with fuelling and cleaning vehicles where required.
Is responsible for tools or other property issued to him by the ICRC.
Actively assists in keeping inventory for the workshop and its stores as required.
Supervises, trains, and coaches drivers when necessary.
Vehicle Checks
Assist drivers daily/weekly/monthly vehicle checks (fuel, oil, water, breaks, lights, tyres…).
Ensures that vehicles going to the field are roadworthy.
Assist driver’s vehicle check before and after vehicle departs for the field trip.
Checks general working and body conditions of the vehicle and draw up the attention of car dispatcher and carpool manager.
To assist car dispatcher on weekly bases to check vehicle equipment as well during maintenance time.
According to inventory reports to carpool for missing equipment.
Checks weekly mileages to follow up for service schedule.
Accident Management
Sources quotations for accident damaged vehicles and to report concerned.
Checks the quality of repair work done on accident damaged vehicles.
To issue a job card for repaired accidents on vehicles and forward to concerned.
Field Activities
To visit/support all ICRC sub delegations and offices for vehicle and generator maintenance issues if needed.
In case of breakdown in the field to be ready to visit and solve the problem in the place.
In case of need/ emergency to replace a driver or to give a hand to other departments.
Other activities
Be aware of the delegations’ objectives and activities.
Understand the three components of the Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement
Always apply the security rules.
Respects and observes ICRC staff regulations.
The employee may be asked to perform duties and task not covered in this job description as well as to provide support to other departments when necessary.
Job Requirements
Technical school diploma or equivalent experience.
Good oral skills and basic reading and writing skills in English
Good computer skills.
Driving license Grade III or equivalent
Driving license IV and above is an asset
Multiple local language speaking ability is an asset.
Professional Experience required
Three years' work experience in a similar position.
Knowledge of welding and electricity is an asset
Experience working with generators is an asset
Very good knowledge of the local area and integration into a professional network.
