“Ethiopian German Energy Cooperation”
Brief Description of the project/ unit
As an international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations, the federally owned Deutsche Gesellschaft für International Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH supports the German Government in achieving its development policy objectives. GIZ promotes complex reforms and change processes. In Ethiopia, GIZ has been working for more than 40 years in bilateral cooperation on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and on the commission of the Ethiopian Government and other international donors.
Alongside work in multilateral energy organizations and initiatives, the Energy Partnerships, Dialogues and Cooperation (summarized under the title of energy partnerships; EP) are the central instrument of the German Federal Government's foreign energy policy strategy under the auspices of the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK).
The Ethiopian German Energy Cooperation was established in November 2019 in the side-lines of the G20 Compact with Africa (CwA) summit. A joint declaration of intent on the establishment of a project-based energy cooperation has been signed between the Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy (MoWIE); now Ministry of Water and Energy (MoWE) of the federal democratic republic of Ethiopia and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), now Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK). The energy cooperation provides a framework for implementing selected projects aiming to enhance political dialogue and cooperation in the energy sector
In the current phase, the Energy Cooperation supported the Ethiopian Ministry of Water and Energy (MoWE) and the Ethiopian Petroleum and Energy Authority (PEA) in the process of developing key strategies, and guidelines by providing direct technical support, engagement of 3 different national consultants from June to October and co-financing with the public partners 6 consultation stakeholder workshops facilitating expert inputs from private sector & academia, a wider cross-sectoral stakeholder engagement in the development of (1) National Sustainable Energy Development Strategy, (2) Technical Directive for Electric Vehicle Charging Facilities and (3) Establishment of a National Technical Committee on Energy efficiency in Building.
The draft documents for the Energy Strategy and the Charging Facilities are ready for final ratification. The Energy Efficiency in Building National Committee and its 3 sub committees for Residential, Public and Commercial buildings are working on a national road map and benchmarks. Energy Cooperation shall support this development process to completion and their implementation.
The cooperation shall continue to focus on the thematic areas of (1) Private Sector Promotion in the Energy Sector (2) Energy Efficiency / Digitalization / E – Mobility (3) Renewable PtX / Hydrogen / Ammonia / Green fertilizer / Sustainable Aviation Fuel.
As GIZ is basically a Capacity Building entity, Communication and Knowledge Management constitute one major pillars of the Energy Cooperation’ mandate.

The Intern will have the following areas of responsibility:
Provides support to the project communication work, e.g. contribute ideas and content to the development of impact stories, news items, interviews etc. on project level in Ethiopia as well as on global level addressing global partners and stakeholders
Work together and coordinate with the EGEC staff as well as the communications team at the GIZ Ethiopia country office.
Participate in relevant (virtual) meetings and support in organising events/workshops etc.
Conduct research and collect information for the preparation of social media posts, speeches, press releases or any type of written piece for communication purposes
Support and follow up the production of digital and printed communication products developed by the project
Administrative tasks in relation to communication and knowledge management activities.
General Duties
Familiarise with the GIZ Ethiopia and Djibouti communication guidelines as well as with the Energy Partnership communication principles and brand book. This also includes the IKEA Foundation communication guidelines.
Represent the interests and always acts on behalf of GIZ.
Ensure the use of office and transport facilities in accordance with terms, conditions and any other agreements of usage.
Carry out any other tasks relevant to the project which may not be explicitly mentioned in the job description but lie in its nature and as assigned by the project coordinator.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in communications, Journalism, Political Science, Economics or energy related fields related field
Professional experience
Passion for the topic of Renewable Energy
Proven experience in content development, writing and/or editorial work and graphics design (work samples may be requested)
Dedicated, reliable team player and highly adaptive, accommodative with intercultural sensitivity and ability to handle pressure and discourse in a professional setting
Good diplomatic and intercultural skills and a sound awareness and sensitivity to gender issues
Ability to think and act strategically and analytically, to grasp new concepts rapidly and prioritise key topics
Proactive, creative, bringing in own ideas and suggestions
Experience in social media content production and management is an advantage
Experience in design and video production with expert knowhow of applications such as Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Premiere Pro is an advantage
Other knowledge, additional competencies
Impeccable English language proficiency, both in written and spoken form. Knowledge of German is an advantage.
Excellent networking skills, communication and presentation skills,
Able to contribute to partnership development, considering the cultural and political contexts in development cooperation particularly in the energy sector;
Strong research and documentation skills;
Willingness to travel to other regions in Ethiopia.
Strong computer skills and proficient in using Microsoft Office 365 applications (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Outlook, MS Teams, etc.)
Very good technical affinity for media contexts including knowledge of a wide range of multimedia, web and digital tools and content management systems is an advantage
