Job Description

The Legal Counsel is responsible for end-to-end legal support of any matter coming from the Operations of the Company to ensure legal compliance. The responsibilities include but are not limited to providing legal advice, review of legal documents, risk assessment and management,provide inhouse training and represent the company before court of law and quasi-judicial organs.

Key Responsibilities 

Legal drafting

  • Draft, Review and approve contracts, MOU’s or any other legal documents required for the business and sign those as a witness.

Legal Advice

  • Research and evaluate different risk factors regarding business decision and operation;

  • Apply effective risk management technique and offer proactive advises on possible legal issues;

  • Communicate and negotiate with external parties (regulators, external counsels and/or government authorities) creating relations of trust;

Inhouse Training

  • Conduct need-assessment for inhouse legal and compliance trainings; 

  • Conduct yearly or bi-annual refresher training on topics the business may find relevant;

Court representation

  • Prepare/review statements of claim, defense, and appeal of court cases;

  • Represent the company before a court of law and quasi-judicial body;

Miscellaneous

  • Lead and participate in the implementation of different projects.

  • Lead and participate in safeguarding and Discipline Committee investigations.

  • Prepare a report of this investigations and report it to the Management team.

Job Requirements

Qualifications 

Educational and Experience 

  • Minimum of LLB. degree in Law.

  • Minimum of 5+ years’ experience in consulting/business advisory, Fintech industry.

Skills & Competencies: 

  • Excellent writing and communication skills.

  • Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint and Excel), AI tools application skills.

  • Strong networking & influencing skills.

  • Business acumen – strong understanding of the business and ability to engage with internal senior business leaders. 

  • Ability to handle complex issues, grasp complex information and communicate simply and sensitively.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs): 

  • The number of new cases received, managed, the time it takes to complete a task, and the cost per case.

  • Drafting contracts that meet organizational needs and adhere to regulatory requirements.

  • Manages potential risks associated with its activities to minimize their impact.

  • The number of contracts processed.

  • Compliance with Regulatory Requirements.

Scope of Work The consultant will be responsible for preparing, delivering, and reporting on a four-day Law Enforcement Agencies–Media-CSOs Dialogue Forum. The scope includes developing a user-friendly training and facilitation manual that combine both legal knowledge and participatory methods, with a particular focus on enhancing understanding of Law Enforcement Agencies-Media-CSOs on issues of media related laws, joint advocacy for action, and the application of human rights–based approaches in law enforcement on media freedom practices. The forum will cover key thematic areas, including: • Media freedom, constitutional guarantees, and rule of law principles with the focus on the international and regional frameworks (including UDHR, ICCPR, ACHPR, and UN frameworks on journalist safety) to set the context. • National legal frameworks governing media and freedom of expression, and their implications for law enforcement, media operation and CSOs advocacy practice. • Digital rights, cyber-security, and the protection of media and CSOs actors in online spaces. • Co-creation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) or a Code of Conduct to guide Law Enforcement Agencies–Media-CSOs engagement, during special events, particularly in the context of the upcoming election. The consultant will facilitate discussions, group work, and role-play exercises to encourage dialogue, identify friction points, and propose practical solutions. Following the forum, the consultant is expected to prepare a concise report summarizing key outcomes, recommendations, and agreed next steps, as well as a draft SOP/Code of Conduct reflecting the contributions of participants.

Scope of Work The selected trainer will be responsible for designing and delivering a two-day capacity-building training for lawyers engaged in media and freedom of expression work in Ethiopia.
