Duration: One year (renewable every year based on performance and funding availability)

The Population Council Ethiopia Country Office seeks a Data Analyst to support research and impact evaluation activities in diverse areas, including sexual and reproductive health, adolescents and young people, migration and trafficking, gender equality and equity, and climate and environmental change. The Council has been working in Ethiopia since 1993 in partnership with the Government, Ministries, NGOs, universities and community-based organisations to improve the lives of the most marginalized adolescent girls and young women and the men and boys in their lives. The Council conducts population-based surveys and qualitative studies to generate robust, reliable data about the lives of people in Ethiopia in diverse settings and circumstances and tests tailored programmatic innovations through rigorous evaluations. These data have been instrumental in shaping national and international policies and programs for people in Ethiopia and globally.
The Data Analyst will support the Council’s Ethiopia office by coordinating and contributing to data analysis activities under the supervision of the Researcher Associate I.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct qualitative and quantitative data analysis.
Conduct advanced data analysis using the Difference-in-Differences (DiD) method to evaluate the impact of the PPFP program.
Conduct advanced data analysis using experimental methods (e.g., Randomized Controlled Trials) and quasi-experimental impact evaluation techniques (e.g., Difference-in-Differences (DiD), Propensity Score Matching (PSM), and others) across various research thematic areas of the Council.
Clean, manage, and analyze large datasets related to maternal and child health, family planning, and program outcomes.
Develop and implement robust statistical models to assess program effectiveness.
Prepare high-quality reports, visualizations, and presentations to communicate findings to stakeholders.
Collaborate with the research team to refine study design and ensure methodological rigor.
Contribute to policy recommendations based on evaluation results.
Strengthen the quality of quantitative and qualitative data, undertake data cleaning, and support the interpretation of findings to inform policy and programming on the Council’s four priority areas: Sexual and reproductive health and rights, Adolescents and young people, Gender equality and equity, and Climate and environmental changes
Develop and manage data entry systems, ensuring data accuracy through spot checks and consistency checks.
Oversee transcription and post-coding of qualitative data using NVivo or Atlas.Ti.
Ensure strict adherence to ethical protocols and data security policies.
Assist in developing and pretesting research instruments, including translation and back-translation.
Contribute to report writing, manuscripts for publication, policy briefs, blogs, and conference presentations.
Support dissemination activities through workshops, press releases, and digital platforms.
Strengthen project implementation by developing management information systems (MIS) for partners.
Facilitate data-driven program improvements and mid-course corrections.
Represent the Council’s research in meetings with donors, partners, and research working groups.
Participate in conferences, workshops, and research forums to enhance visibility and collaboration.
Master’s degree in economics, statistics, epidemiology, public health, demography, data science, or a related field.
Experience with large-scale impact evaluations, preferably in the health sector.
Proven expertise in experimental (e.g., Randomized Controlled Trials) and quasi-experimental impact evaluation methods (e.g., Difference-in-Differences (DiD), Propensity Score Matching (PSM), and others).
Strong proficiency in Stata (experience with R, SPSS, or Python is an asset).
Experience working with large-scale primary data, survey data, large health or demographic datasets (e.g., DHS, HMIS).
Strong analytical, writing, and communication skills.
Familiarity with qualitative data analysis software (e.g., NVivo, Atlas.Ti).
Knowledge of maternal and child health, family planning, or RMNCH programs is an advantage.
Proficiency in English, with strong oral and written communication skills.
Strong ability to work collaboratively across teams and stakeholders.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and deliver high-quality work under tight deadlines.
International experience and a publication record in peer-reviewed journals are considered a plus.
