Work Place: Ethiopian Public Health Institute 

Reporting to:  Malaria and Tropical Diseases Research Directorate, Zoonotic disease  research division 

Salary: As per EPHI Contract Staff Salary Scale

Background

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global public health concern, particularly regarding zoonotic bacteria/diseases linked to food of animal origin, environment and water towards One health in action. In Ethiopia, the laboratory-based surveillance for AMR is underdeveloped, leading to a scarcity of reliable data particularly with in the interface of human animal ecosystem. This TOR outlines the role of an Epidemiologist to support the implementation of a comprehensive zoonotic AMR surveillance system in Ethiopia.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct a baseline assessment of laboratory facilities to evaluate readiness for zoonotic AMR surveillance.

  • Identify potential challenges and enablers in implementing zoonotic AMR surveillance.

  • Collaborate with animal health institutes and other stakeholders to validate and disseminate the AMR surveillance document.

  • Train health professionals in data capturing, analysis, and reporting using appropriate software and databases.

  • Facilitate training on specimen collection and transportation for laboratory professionals.

  • Capacitate zoonotic AMR detection capacity at sub national/regional, national through partnership and networking to strengthen the one health system in Ethiopia.

  • Standardize working documents (SOP, guidelines and protocols) for zoonotic AMR surveillance 

  • Create an efficient data management schedule in line with field support activity and One Health actors 

Communication and coordination

Communicate effectively with Malaria and Tropical Diseases Research Directorate, Zoonotic disease research division and AMR coordination   teams, zoonotic AMR surveillance sites, EPHI relevant directorates, relevant national stakeholders mainly with the animal health sector  in a One Health approach  and international partners as appropriate on data related issues

Deliverables

  1. Facility Readiness Assessment Report: Document findings from the baseline assessment, including identified gaps and recommendations.

  2. Training Materials: Develop and provide training manuals and resources for capacity-building workshops.

  3. Active Surveillance Implementation Plan: Outline steps and methodologies for initiating surveillance, routine follow up and quarterly supervise the implementation of zoonotic AMR in the sentinel sites based on developed national protocol.

  4. Validated AMR Implementation Guide and standardized SOPs: Finalized document after validation workshops, ready for dissemination.

  5. Progress Reports: Quarterly  & annual reports on activities, challenges, and achievements related to the project objectives.

  6. Dissemination report: Annually disseminate the zoonotic AMR findings to the stakeholders 

Job Requirements

  • Master’s degree or above in Epidemiology, Public Health, or a related field.

  • Minimum of  7 years of relevant experience in public health, preferably in AMR or zoonotic disease surveillance setting

Required skills 

  • Strong understanding of Zoonotic AMR in a  One Health approach and its application. 

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. 

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders. 

  • Excellent writing and editing skills. 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). 

  • Experience with data analysis software is an advantage. .

  • Excellent communication and training skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
