The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) is a leading biomedical and clinical research institute under the Ethiopian Ministry of Health. The Optimizing Severe Pneumonia Management in Children Through Scale-Up of Bubble Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (bCPAP) Technology in Low-Resource Settings (OPT-bCPAP) project aims to improve childhood pneumonia outcomes by expanding access to low-cost bCPAP technology in Ethiopia, Nigeria and Malawi. This initiative focuses on implementation research to assess barriers and facilitators, feasibility, acceptability, and impact in healthcare settings.
AHRI is seeking an Independent Researcher to lead and support qualitative research activities within the OPT-bCPAP project. The researcher will be responsible for designing and implementing qualitative research components, including data collection, analysis, and dissemination of findings. The role requires a high level of expertise in qualitative research methods and the ability to work independently while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team.
Lead the refinement of qualitative data collection tools (interview guides).
Design and conduct qualitative data collection, including in-depth interviews and focus group discussions.
Analyze qualitative data using advanced qualitative data analysis software (e.g., NVivo, ATLAS.ti, MAXQDA).
Lead the drafting of research reports and manuscripts for publication in high-impact peer-reviewed journals.
Ensure compliance with ethical guidelines and oversee ethical approval submissions.
Provide training and mentorship to junior researchers and data collectors.
Collaborate with the principal investigator and co-investigators to achieve project objectives.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience:
PhD in Public Health, Social Sciences, or a related field with at least three years of relevant work experience OR
Master’s degree in Public Health, Social Sciences, or a related field with at least five years of relevant work experience.
Proven expertise in qualitative research methods, including study design, data collection, and analysis.
Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals, with at least four qualitative research publications.
Proficiency in qualitative data analysis software (e.g., NVivo, ATLAS.ti, MAXQDA).
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; knowledge of local languages is an asset.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and lead research activities with minimal supervision.
Experience working in multidisciplinary teams and collaborating with diverse stakeholders.
Employment Terms:
Number required for each position: 1 (One)
Contract Type: Renewable contract based on performance and project needs.
Salary: As per AHRI’s salary scale for researcher II.
Duty Station: Armauer Hansen Research Institute, with travel to study sites as required.
Reports To: Principal Investigator of the OPT-bCPAP project.
