About the Project:

The Optimizing Severe Pneumonia Management in Children Through Scale-Up of Bubble Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (bCPAP) Technology in Low-Resource Settings (OPT-bCPAP) project aims to improve childhood pneumonia outcomes by expanding access to low-cost bCPAP technology in Ethiopia, Nigeria and Malawi. This initiative focuses on implementation research to assess barriers and facilitators, feasibility, acceptability, and impact in healthcare settings.

Job Summary:

AHRI is seeking an Independent Researcher to lead and support qualitative research activities within the OPT-bCPAP project. The researcher will be responsible for designing and implementing qualitative research components, including data collection, analysis, and dissemination of findings. The role requires a high level of expertise in qualitative research methods and the ability to work independently while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the refinement of qualitative data collection tools (interview guides).

  • Design and conduct qualitative data collection, including in-depth interviews and focus group discussions.

  • Analyze qualitative data using advanced qualitative data analysis software (e.g., NVivo, ATLAS.ti, MAXQDA).

  • Lead the drafting of research reports and manuscripts for publication in high-impact peer-reviewed journals.

  • Ensure compliance with ethical guidelines and oversee ethical approval submissions.

  • Provide training and mentorship to junior researchers and data collectors.

  • Collaborate with the principal investigator and co-investigators to achieve project objectives.

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

  • PhD in Public Health, Social Sciences, or a related field with at least three years of relevant work experience OR
    Master’s degree in Public Health, Social Sciences, or a related field with at least five years of relevant work experience.

  • Proven expertise in qualitative research methods, including study design, data collection, and analysis.

  • Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals, with at least four qualitative research publications.

  • Proficiency in qualitative data analysis software (e.g., NVivo, ATLAS.ti, MAXQDA).

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; knowledge of local languages is an asset.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and lead research activities with minimal supervision.

  • Experience working in multidisciplinary teams and collaborating with diverse stakeholders.

Employment Terms:

  • Number required for each position: 1 (One)

  • Contract Type: Renewable contract based on performance and project needs.

  • Salary: As per AHRI’s salary scale for researcher II.

  • Duty Station: Armauer Hansen Research Institute, with travel to study sites as required.

  • Reports To: Principal Investigator of the OPT-bCPAP project.
