Job Description
Under the supervision of the Country Manager, the Surgical Program Manager leads the design, planning, execution, monitoring, and evaluation of all surgical programs of Operation Smile Ethiopia office. This role requires a highly technical person with clinical expertise who provides guidance and support to surgical program coordinators at partner hospitals.
Key Functions
Surgical Program Planning: Collaborates with key staff to design long-term surgical strategic plans and goals.
Point of Contact: Serves as a resource for all clinical and surgical-related areas.
Needs Identification: Works with clinical teams to identify needs from partner hospitals.
Short-term Planning: Leads the development of short-term and annual surgical plans.
Global Alignment: Works closely with the global program operation team.
Budget Preparation: Collaborates with finance and operations to prepare budgets.
Partnership
Strong Partnerships: Fosters relationships with partner hospitals.
Technical Representation: Represents Operation Smile Ethiopia in technical working groups.
Collaboration: Works with regional and HQ technical teams to align program objectives.
Local Associations: Engages with local surgical associations.
International Relationships: Establishes connections with national and international organizations.
Surgical Programmatic Delivery
Implementation Leadership: Leads the implementation of the annual surgical plan.
Logistics Coordination: Ensures logistics are in place for surgical programs.
Technical Support: Provides oversight to surgical program coordinators and clinical volunteers.
Surgical Program Monitoring, Quality and Reporting
Supportive Supervision: Provides regular supervision to partner hospitals.
Meetings Coordination: Handles regular meetings with surgical program coordinators.
Data Collection: Ensures patient data is collected and submitted.
Field Visits: Organizes visits for advisory board members.
Program Reviews: Organizes quarterly program reviews.
Reporting: Prepares updates and reports for the Country Manager.
Global Standards: Ensures implementation of Operation Smile’s global standards.
Quality Meetings: Arranges meetings with medical oversight teams.
Checklist Implementation: Ensures use of the four Pillars checklist.
Performance Management: Manages performance of Surgical Program Coordinators.
Other Duties: Executes any other duties assigned by the supervisor.
Medical Doctor: MD with specialization in surgery.
Work Experience: 3-5 years post-residency in surgery.
Project Management: Experience in project/program management.
NGO Experience: Understanding of international NGO environments.
Travel Ability: Willingness to travel locally and internationally.
Communication Skills: Excellent oral and written English skills.
Software Proficiency: Ability to use Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
Financial Management: Ability to manage financial spreadsheets.
Organization Skills: Excellent organization and time management skills.
Motivated Individual: Proven ability to lead and coordinate projects.
Project Management Skills: Strong skills with proven experience.
Personality: Pro-active and approachable with stress management skills.
Diplomacy: Ability to handle issues with tact and cultural sensitivity.
On-call Availability: Ability to work off hours as needed.
