Assistant Researcher - Entomologist

Job Description          

The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was founded in 1970 through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations seconded by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. The Institute got its name from the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae). AHRI reorganized by the decree of the Council of Minister’s Regulation No. 376/2016 as biomedical research, clinical trial and research capacity building under the Federal Ministry of Health. AHRI, over its 50 years in service, is well known for its hub function for skill and technology transfer and partnership embracing research agendas with direct impact in the development and transformation of population in Ethiopia and beyond.

The Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases (MNTD) Research Division is one of the departments in the institute and currently has different research projects on Malaria and related areas funded by international partners. 

Therefore, the MNTD Division is looking for self-driven, motivated, innovative and energetic researcher to join our team as Assistant Researcher - Entomologist. 

Roles and responsibilities:

• Conducting and leading field entomology activities

• Planning, setting up and undertaking laboratory experiments independently and with minimal need for supervision

• Reviewing state-of-the-art research protocols and recommending appropriate experimental plan to the PI

• Designing, conducting and interpreting scientific research 

• Conducting and supporting scientific investigations and experiments

• Monitoring experiments to ensure adherence to established standard operating procedures and verifying the quality of data generated

• Analyzing and interpreting experimental data

• Providing technical support to other researchers

• Preparing articles/abstracts for publication and/or presentation at national and international conferences

• Writing reports, reviews and summaries to report to the PI

• Writing scientific manuscripts and technical reports and publish in reputable journals

• Keeping up to date with relevant scientific and technical developments relevant to the project

• Supervising staff and other laboratory users (such as graduate students)

• Liaising with national and international project partners in relation to the project

• Assisting the PI in preparing draft manuscripts and following-up the process of publishing in scientific journals 

• Assisting the PI in writing research proposals or grant applications for submission to external bodies

• Perform other duties of the PI as required

Job Requirements

Qualification and Experience:

• BSc in Biology, Medical Laboratory Sciences or Biotechnology and MSc in Medical Entomology or any Biomedical Science fields. 

• Two years and above work experience

• Publications have an advantage

Desired Skills and Experiences:

• Experience in immature and adult mosquito collection and species identification with different techniques

• Experience in insecticide susceptibility tests (Bioassay Tests)

• Experience in laboratory methods such as immunological methods (blood meal and sporozoite ELISA), isolation and analysis of DNA, RNA or protein samples 

• Experience in research projects

Positions available: 2 (two)

Duty station: Addis Ababa with a frequent travel to the field sites and stay for months in the field

Salary: As per the organization scale

Terms of employment: One year contract period with full time employment basis with possibility of extension based on performance and budget availability.
