Job Description
Under the supervision of the Logistics assistant, the Driver will be responsible for the driving, repair and maintenance, safety and security, and documentation of the vehicle.
Safety & security:
Ensure that only authorized people enter MDM vehicles, i.e., MDM-staff, MDM collaborators.
Ensure that no weapons, military dressed people or police-people enter MDM vehicles.
Ensure that all non-MDM staff in the vehicle has signed before a discharge of liabilities.
Ensure that all personnel wear a seatbelt, and that total number of passengers is within legal limits.
Ensure that all material transported is authorized before transport and it is within loading capacity.
Ensure that all material transported is well secured by driver inside, at the back or on top of vehicle.
Must never transport passengers at the back of pick-up trucks, unless in case of a serious emergency and always after a prior authorization by the Logistics Coordinator or Head of Mission.
Must always drive carefully respecting all traffic rules, speed limits, other vehicles and pedestrians, following MDM driving regulation.
Ensure that all security rules are respected when passing customs, checkpoints and roadblocks.
Ensure that nobody is smoking while in the vehicle.
Stay always close to vehicle, when out of base, in order to protect vehicle
Remaining stand-by in the office in between movements
Assist in briefing and training of all staff regarding vehicle rules and procedures.
Help to load and unload the vehicle, if needed.
Provide driving/transport service to MdM staff/visitors with care respecting the faith and culture of national and international staff as per the direction of the line supervisor
Ensure all equipment allocated to the vehicle is complete and in good working order, including spare tires and communications equipment (radios, satellite phones, etc.), before undertaking any journeys.
Before commencing a journey, ensure that the vehicle is in good working condition, clean, appropriately equipped, and has adequate fuel for the intended journey.
Ensure all supplies and equipment to be carried are accompanied by appropriate paperwork, packed, and stowed away safely and securely.
Understand and practice MdM relevant policies, rules, and regulations such as transport, fleet, and security management policies for the Ethiopia mission
Drive the vehicles in a safe and appropriate manner in accordance with Ethiopia road transport regulations as well as MdM Ethiopia transport and security policy/procedures.
Maintain neat & accurate records of all journeys in the vehicle log book and ensure authorized travelers are signed for the journey that they used.
Keep and respect MdM driver rules, conduct, and safety standards e.g. Daily and weekly safety checks are done at all times before starting the journey.
Report any faulty vehicle part for maintenance to the logistics assistant and ensure the periodical service is carried out time before the scheduled service time is overdue
Maintain all safety and security measures for the vehicle and passengers. Ensure the vehicle is parked in a safe, appropriate, and secured area.
Keep all tools, spare tires, and other safety & health-related equipment with due care.
Always carry out basic security checks on the vehicles before starting driving and at the end of the day. (Battery water, fuel & oil levels, radiator water, Tyre pressure/condition, etc.)
Report immediately any damage or incident/accident to the logistics assistant in line with the correct procedures.
Ensure that the vehicle is only used for MdM-approved purposes
Ensure MdM’s health and safety rules are respected e.g. No mobile phones are to be answered when driving, and every passenger should wear Safety Belt while traveling with MdM car
As a representative of MdM the duty driver is expected to dress and behave in a respectable manner at all times
The driver should manage his time properly and report promptly to work. He should also ensure that he is adequately rested prior to service.
Documents
Ensure that all vehicles and driver’s documents are in vehicle, i.e. driving license, registration papers, insurance, satellite phone licenses, and inform line manager if something is missing or expiring soon.
Be aware of any document regarding detailed responsibilities of drivers (ex. standard phone contact points, maps, maintenance of vehicles, daily, weekly and periodic vehicle check-ups).
Ensure that all passengers have all the necessary papers in order (ex. permits) before travelling.
Ensure that there is always enough discharge of liabilities for all non-MDM staff to sign.
Reporting
Inform immediately line manager or any coordinator available regarding security incidents or important information that might be seen on the road.
Report immediately to line manager of any mechanical or other problems related to vehicle.
Use vehicle Logbook in order to monitor movements, services, accidents, refuelling, mileage, etc.
Others
Be flexible in performing his/her duties
Punctually collecting quotations, checking prices, and realizing small purchases of goods and services
Helping to load and unload equipment and materials
Perform other additional duties on request of the logistics manage/coordinator
Maintain full confidentiality for all work-related information
Participate in meetings and possible trainings.
Education:
High school graduate and and 3rd Grade Driving License
Auto mechanic certificate is plus
Professional work experience
At least 3 years of work experience in Driver position
desirable experience with other INGOs & UN organizations
Skills and Qualities Required
Excellent communication skills
Having Auto mechanic certification is plus
Essential good knowledge of area of work
Good communication and interpersonal skills, including negotiation and conflict resolution skills
Strong organizational and team working skills.
Ability to work under pressure and with limited supervision.
Experience in working with international humanitarian organizations is a plus.
Being available within short period will be considered.
Commitment to work during day, night and weekend
Languages:Afar and English language essential, and Amharic is desirable
Competencies: Good communication skills, flexibility, attention to detail, ability to work in
a multi-cultural environment, quick decision-making and prompt action, open-mindedness, transparency and honesty beyond reproach, discretion, politeness, and courtesy. Excellent time management/timekeeping experience and dedication to respecting others’ time schedules. Willing to work as per the above-stated working hours and readiness to accept unanticipated orders outside his/her working hours. Able to undertake minor vehicle service and maintenance.
