Job Description

The Ethiopian Women Lawyers’ Association (EWLA) invites competent and qualified candidates to apply for the vacant post of which the detail requirements are mentioned here below.

Brief Highlight of EWLA: Ethiopian Women Lawyers Association has been established at the federal level in 1995 by Women lawyers and re-registered as Local Organization in accordance with the Civil Society Organization. It has been working for more than 25 years to promote women's social, economic, political and legal rights to help women exercise their constitutional and other rights.

The aim of the association is to promote equal participation of women in all sectors and to prevent sexual violence against women and create a safe environment for women through its three programs: Legal Research and Advocacy, Public Education and Capacity Building, and Free Legal Aid service.  

The association is head quartered in Addis Ababa and has opened its regional offices in seven regions and one city administration namely Adama, Hawassa, Bahir Dar, Gambella, Asosa, Jigjiiga, Semera regions and city administration of Dire Dawa. To make the service accessible to all, the association is working to continue its service in the zones and woredas under its regional and city administration branches and has so far established 55 volunteer committee centers across the country. Besides, it has established a hotline service (7711) which operates in 3 local languages: Amharic, Afan Oromo and Tigrigna.

Position Title: Executive Director    

Work Unit: Executive Director’s Office                 

Reports To: The Board          

Staff under supervision: Deputy Executive directressPrograms manager, Finance manager, HR & Pro. Admin Department, PR Officer M & E Officer and Legal Aid in the head office as well as regional branches.          

In conformity with the delegation of authority entrusted by the Board of Directors, the Executive Director of EWLA is responsible for tasks that involve policy interpretation; strategy development; financial as well as human power planning and analysis; coordination and control of activities both at the Head Quarter and Branch Office Levels; coaches and evaluates the performance of staff members under her direct supervision; performs other strategic tasks of the Association

Duties and responsibilities

  1. Formulates and reviews EWLA’s short, medium, and long-term strategic objectives and policies within the powers delegated to her by the Board of Directors.

    1. Maintains and establishes good relationships and cooperation within the consortium and other and other donors for financial assistance relevant to strengthen EWLA’s programs and activities.

    2. Prepares annual operational plan in relation to the strategic plan document by ensuring that sufficient funds, skilled human power and proper organizational arrangements are secured;

    3. Presents annual operational plan with appropriate budget allocation to the Board of Directors for approval.

    4. Coordinate and control the implementation of work plan by ensuring that the concerned/responsible personnel are executing  their job effectively;

    5. Approves administrative and financial matters in accordance to rules, regulations, guidelines and directives within the powers delegated to her by the Board of Directors;

    6. Submits bi-annual and annual progress reports as well as financial statements required by the consortium, other donors, and the Board of Directors;

    7. Chairs EWLA’s Management Committee meeting and serves as Secretary of the Board of Directors.

    8. Lead and Visits Regional Offices and Zonal/Woreda Committees, follows up progress of work and solve major problems on the spot;

    9.  Represents EWLA at national and international forums;

    10. Coaches and evaluates the performance of staff members under her direct supervision;

    11. Carries out other related functions which may be assigned by the Board of Directors. 

Job Requirements

Academic Qualification

  •  Bachelor or Master's Degree in LAW

Work Experience

  • 10 years of experience for Bachelor’s degree or

  • 8 years of experience for Master’s degree  

  • out of which 3 years’ experience is in managerial position 

Desirable Trainings, knowledge, skill or experience

  • Leadership and managerial skills development; policy advocacy and resource mobilization; finance for non-finance people; project design and implementation; good governance; strategic plan and change management, e.tc.

  • Strategic leadership experience in civil society organizations specifically working on promoting gender equality, women empowerment, mitigating gender based violence, legal aid provision, policy advocacy, development, or public sector; proven track record in strategic planning, program management, fundraising, and organizational management, and experience working with boards of directors and multi-stakeholder partnerships.

Other Requirement

  • Experience of managing large, multicultural teams of people and ability to resolve conflict.

  • Experience of liaising with donors and government officials, and of donor proposal writing and reporting, with a proven ability to secure donor funding.

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to handle multiple tasks, 

  • Flexibility to adapt to changing requirements, no conflict of interest with the organization 

  • Budgetary control and financial management skills, Demonstrated commitment to EWLA's mission and values
