Report to: The medical laboratory technologist specialist will work under the Referral and Reference Laboratory Directorate at EPHI.
Place of work: The Specialist will be based at EPHI, but will also travel to regions as found necessary.
Employment type: Permanent and as per your current salary or as per government scale for the position. Selected applicants will be recruited through the government transfer recruitment process, so the organization you are currently working should allow you to be transferred to EPHI once you selected for the positions.
Background and Job summary
Ethiopian Public Health Institute is responsible for providing referral and reference laboratory service for different facilities throughout the country. To achieve these responsibilities the referral and reference laboratories directorate plans to hire/transfer competent laboratory technologists. These technologists will be responsible for analysing specimens collected from patients and received from various health facilities and provide quality laboratory results for the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of disease.
The duties and responsibilities of the Medical Laboratory Technologists includes, but not limited to, the following.
Perform routine work of laboratory using validated testing procedures in Clinical chemistry, Haematology, HIV, Microbiology and TB laboratories
Generate daily results and reports for signature and distribution by authorized officer
Perform routine quality control evaluation of assays and reagents
Operate laboratory equipment following established protocols and perform routine checks and basic maintenance of laboratory equipment
Manage laboratory inventory and orders for reagents and consumables
Adhere to safety standard and ensure proper use of personnel protective equipment for patients and staff. Ensure all procedures are performed in accordance with the relevant Health and Safety policy and procedures
Perform calibration on instruments according to defined schedules
Report corrective actions taken whenever test systems deviate from established levels of performance to quality manager
Implement laboratory quality management systems in the laboratory
Supporting and building the capacities of other facilities in proper management of tests and clinical interpretation of results
Assist in the training of personnel on lab methods and instrumentation use
Qualification and experience
Bachelor’s (BSc) degree in Medical Laboratory Technology with minimum 3 years’ experience working in clinical settings.
Required skills and attributes
Knowledge, skill and operation of laboratory sample analysis
Knowledge on basic automated laboratory instrumentation
Experience in HIV Viral load, Early Infant Diagnosis (EID), automated clinical chemistry and Hematology analyzers laboratory testing
Experience in Microbiology and TB laboratory testing
Training in laboratory quality management system
Experience in providing technical guidance and support to other staffs
Excellent communication skills including public speaking and ability to address complex issues and concepts clearly, and concisely
Effective time management skills, ability to work with a team and independently when required
