Head Nursing Services, Manages, directs, plans and coordinates the functions and activities of nursing department; oversees and administers assigned patients care programs and services.
Serves as part of the hospital’s senior management team; provides direct input regarding the organizational structure of the hospital; provides expert professional assistance to hospital executives regarding nursing related matters and performs other related duties assigned.
Organizational Planning and Management
Participate in strategic planning processes to provide better programs, services, facilities and access for patients and residents.
Participate in the development of annual business plans and budgets for each nursing related program and services, monitor performance against these budgets.
Maintain appropriate staffing levels and skill mix, through effective staff recruitment and development.
Manage grievances and disciplinary issues within the nursing department in accordance with approved procedures.
Co-ordinate the nursing performance appraisal system in conjunction with Human Resource Manager.
Nurse Administration:
Innovative leadership in overall management of human, material and financial resources.
Provide highly visible leadership and foster a culture which values continuing professional development that empowers nurses to achieve excellence in the delivery of patient care.
Communicate with senior-level executives on all matters pertaining to nursing.
Collaborate with the administrative staff, other department personnel and representatives of allied groups in planning services for patients.
Ensure the coordination and management of nursing activities within a framework of continuous quality improvement, ensuring realistic utilization of nursing resources.
Ensure rostering practices are appropriate in relation to skill set and patient acuity to ensure appropriate level of care.
Understand staff satisfaction drivers, implement and promote initiatives to retain quality staff.
Review and evaluate administrative and clinical nursing procedures within the hospital. Evaluate clinical competency of nurses according to the established performance evaluation process.
Ensure the clinical competency of each nurse prior to assignment of independent patient care activities.
Maintain current knowledge of international trends in nursing care delivery and incorporate this knowledge into daily operation of the department of nursing.
Make every effort to make current nursing books and journals available to staff nurses and encourage research-based practice.
Seek new ways of improving the service and keep abreast of modern practice and techniques.
Identify opportunities’ that may progress the development of innovative models of care for nursing services that place the patient at the centre of the service and manage transition points effectively to ensure that each patient receives the most appropriate care.
Research and implement best practice models of work performance and use benchmarking to evaluate ongoing performance across the health service.
Develop, review and implement a business plan for nursing services.
Evaluate staffing, equipment and supply needs prepare justifications and cost benefit analyses, review and recommend approval of expenditures, oversee the procurement of supplies and equipment of assigned areas.
Ensure that all complaints, grievances, disputes and disciplinary measures are managed in accordance with corresponding policy and procedures.
Co-ordinate the nursing performance appraisal system in conjunction with Human Resources Manager.
Institute a system for evaluation and control of supply levels including a written reporting system.
Conducts and participates in a variety of staff and committee meetings.
Review incident forms from all patients and where appropriate, delegate resolution to responsible floor officer and notify hospital quality system.
Promote staff health and develop programs with a view to a reduction in workplace injury.
Review all health and safety reports and incidents and take appropriate action.
Promotes customer service and hospitality and responds to and adequately resolves complaints or concerns from residents or families about nursing services.
Nursing Quality
Coordinate with Quality system in leading and directing the Quality Activities program to ensure continuing improvement in all services and programs provided.
Ensure the development, implementations and maintenance of a clinical risk management program and appropriate clinical benchmarking system.
Assist in developing innovative and objective processes for evaluating, monitoring and reporting on the quality of services provided.
Ensure the continuing monitoring and maintenance of optimal nursing care standards through active participation and promotion of Accreditation and the Quality Improvement Programs
Infection Prevention and Control
Ensure compliance with Infection Control Policies and procedures throughout the organization and audited.
Prepares or reviews infection control surveillance reports to identify trends and to develop effective actions to control and prevent infections.
Act as the focal point for integrating prevention and control of infection.
Ensure that the protection of patients from infection received the highest priority across hospital.
Lead the development and oversee the implementation of the hospital’s annual prevention and control of Infection programme.
Lead Hospital’s Infection Control Team and oversee Infection Control Policies and their implementation.
Nursing Education:
Ensure that a comprehensive orientation program is conducted for all the new nursing personnel.
Guide the development of an efficient and effective nursing education unit.
Oversee provision and implementation of educational programs for nurses.
Participate in assessment of learning needs and provide opportunities for staff development
Plan, coordinate and participate in nursing in-service training.
Plan with educational institutions for the use of hospital facilities, which include student learning experience and clinical practice.
Participate and promote interest in activities of professional nursing as evidenced by attendance at professional seminars and community activities.
Other Duties as Required

Qualification : Master Degree/ BSC in Nursing
Experience : 10+ years of progressive nursing leadership experience. Minimum 5 years in a senior nursing management role in a medium-to-large healthcare facility (50-100 beds preferred)
