 The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was founded in 1970 through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations seconded by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. The Institute got its name from the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae). AHRI is a biomedical research institute that works in developing tools for prevention, control and treatment of mycobacterium and other diseases of public healthy importance through applied and basic biomedical research and training. 

AHRI would like to hire a qualified candidate in the position of Researcher I under the One Health Division (Knowledge and Management Directorate). 

 Job Description

The One Health Epidemiologist/Microbiologist (Researcher II), is a professional who works on the integrated research at the human-animal and environment interface. This entry-level position is designed for a motivated individual who is passionate about One Health. The role involves doing research in the field, often in remote areas (e.g. sample collection), conducting laboratory experiments, analyzing results, and assisting in the translation of research findings into meaningful policies, awareness creation and innovative surveillance and/or control strategies for zoonosis. The selected researcher will be part of the One Health Division, under the Knowledge and Management Directorate and he/she is expected to conduct research according to the institute research ethics and standard operating procedures. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Helping in carrying out organization/planning and coordination of field activities as requested by projects falling under the One Health Division

  • Support data collection in the field

  • Support the Division with student supervision (field and lab activities)

  • Support the Division in its representation (e.g. meetings, scientific conferences and workshops)

  • Support the Division in administrative matters (e.g. accounting, compiling, planning and reporting) 

  • Supporting the One-Health Unit in acquiring new funding through grant application writing

  • Develop own research funding and research activity portfolio

  • Foster research collaboration with other Departments at AHRI

  • Perform basic data management (data entry, data cleaning) and statistical analysis

  • Perform literature searches and reviews to stay updated on the latest scientific advances and write reports and peer-reviewed manuscripts

  • Perform other related tasks as assigned by supervisors

Personal Attributes:

 The candidate for the job is expected to have

  • Strong understanding of the One Health concept

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Knowledge/working experience with pastoral communities (e.g. culture, tradition), particularly Afar and Somali

  • Willingness to travel to remote field areas and stay there for longer times

  • Experience in multi- and transdisciplinary research work

  • Proficiency in written and oral English

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Ability for swift problem solving

  • Willingness to take up additional responsibilities, including off-working hours and weekends as needed

  • Good team player, good behavior

  • Committed to the values of integrity, accountability, transparency and scientific rigor

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team

  • Proficient in laboratory techniques (e.g. microscopy, serology, molecular diagnostic), equipment handling and data analysis (proficient with software tools such as Microsoft Excel, STATA or other statistical software) 

  • Knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements such as Good Laboratory Practice

  • Basic understanding in health research ethics

Job Requirements

 Education, Experience & Publication Point:-     

  • BSc in veterinary medicine

  • MSc in Veterinary epidemiology/Microbiology and 6 years of experience and 7 publications

  • Training in One Health Research concept
