The Kumuruk Project is one of MAXAM’s flagship initiatives, located in Ethiopia. This project represents a significant investment in the region’s mining sector, aiming to enhance operational efficiency, safety, and sustainability.
Job Overview To safely conduct surface blasting operations in accordance with Ethiopian regulatory requirements, MAXAM global standards, and best industry practices as per Australian Standards (AS2187). The Shotfirer is responsible for the preparation, charging, and detonation of blasts, ensuring strict compliance with safety, environmental, and operational procedures.
Reports To: Drill & Blast Supervisor / Project Manager
HSEQ Responsibilities
Uphold a strong safety culture and environmental compliance.
Follow site-specific Safe Work Instructions, Job Safety Analysis (JSA), and MAXAM Safe Work Procedures.
Conduct thorough pre-blast risk assessments and site inspections.
Report incidents, near misses, or safety breaches immediately.
Participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, and refresher training.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Prime, charge, stem, and fire blast holes following site procedures, Ethiopian explosives regulations, and MAXAM protocols.
Conduct testing and connection of shot firing circuits using certified instruments.
Ensure the blast area is secured and cleared in accordance with safety exclusion zones.
Complete and maintain blast documentation including charging sheets, usage logs, and misfire reports.
Support loading/unloading of explosives and accessories in line with legal transport guidelines.
Assist in plant and site operations, maintenance tasks, and general site duties.
Identify and report equipment malfunctions or safety hazards.
Undertake ongoing training, upskilling, and competency assessments.
Job Requirements
Skills and Qualifications
Valid Ethiopian Shotfirer permit or eligibility to be licensed by the Ministry of Mines.
Minimum 2 years of experience in surface mining blast operations.
Proven knowledge in handling and detonation of bulk emulsion or packaged explosives.
Familiarity with electronic and non-electric initiation systems.
Ability to work in remote and high-temperature environments.
Physically fit to pass site medical checks and substance testing.
Desirable (as per Australian Standard 2187)
Nationally recognized training in surface extraction operations (equivalent to Certificate IV).
Experience working with Mobile Processing Units (MPUs) and emulsion systems.
Knowledge of vibration control, fly rock management, and environmental blasting practices.
