Center for Justice (CJ) is the criminal justice civil society organization registered at the Federal Authority for Civil Society Organizations (ACSO). CJ is working to promote criminal justice system that uphold human rights for all and the rule of law.

CJ is dedicated to :

  • Make criminal justice system protect the rights of vulnerable populations,

  • Promote humane and rehabilitative prison environments that align with efforts for environmental sustainability/ Green prison/,

  • Provide legal aid services to the poor, women and other groups living in vulnerable situations to increase access to legal aid and assistance,

  • Strengthen the work of correction and rehabilitation of prisoners, reintegration of prisoners to the community after serving their time in prison,

  • Promoting non-custodial methods of punishment

  • Monitor human rights in prisons and detention facilities, assist police detention facilities and prisons in adhering to relevant international human rights standards and promote democracy and peace.

  • Run practical human rights programmes that enhance protection of prisoners ' rights and support reforms that accelerating crime prevention, criminal justice and the rule of law

  • Enhance protection of human rights, the rule of law and the status of peace and an improved justice system

Center for Justice ( CJ) is seeking highly motivated Legal Expert . The Legal Expert supervises the legal aid service delivery and support the interns with legal expertise. The Legal Expert works closely with the Program Officer and Project and Advocacy Officer Necessary for the execution of project work.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Lead the legal aid service activities as per the project documents;

  • Assist interns providing legal aid service

  • Preparing technically sound, coherent, and well-crafted terms of reference, concept papers and project plan.

  • Crafting working methods that seek to improve the overall effectiveness of the project work and organizational efficiency;

  • Ensuring the integration of national and international human rights principles in the project and keeping it abreast of new and emerging developments

  • Ensuring that the project activities and their respective outputs are of high quality, effective, and delivered in a timely manner.

  • Court representation for the vulnerable groups

  • Design, distribute and collect reporting templates;

  • Analyze data and prepare monthly reports.

Job Requirements

  • Proven work experience as a legal aid service project coordinator, or similar roles;

  • Advanced MS Word, MS Excel skills;

  • Sharp time management skills;

  • Strong attention to detail;

  • Strong ethics, with an ability to manage confidential data;

  • Ability to manage conflict by herself/himself;

  • Excellent team player;

Education:

  • Minimum LL. B. Degree or Master’s degree in Law.

  • Training in project cycle management, monitoring & evaluation, advocacy, and donor policies and procedures (formal certification) is a plus.

Experience:

  • Minimum 3-5 years of legal representation in courts (like prosecution )

  • Experience in leading in legal aid services is highly desirable;

Other requirements:

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in work outputs, including written communication;

  • Fluency in written and spoken English and Amharic. Additional language skill is a plus;

  • Ability to independently track and manage multiple tasks and complete them quickly.

The consultant will facilitate discussions, group work, and role-play exercises to encourage dialogue, identify friction points, and propose practical solutions. Following the forum, the consultant is expected to prepare a concise report summarizing key outcomes, recommendations, and agreed next steps, as well as a draft SOP/Code of Conduct reflecting the contributions of participants.

Scope of Work The selected trainer will be responsible for designing and delivering a two-day capacity-building training for lawyers engaged in media and freedom of expression work in Ethiopia.
