Job Description
The Senior Economist will provide high-level economic research, forecasting, and policy analysis to guide the Mining Cluster’s strategic decision-making. This role involves analyzing macroeconomic trends, commodity markets, regulatory impacts, and investment opportunities to optimize business performance. The Senior Economist will work closely with the Project, Finance and PME Directorate, and executive leadership to assess risks, evaluate projects, and support long-term growth strategies.
Economic Research & Market Analysis
Conduct macroeconomic and sector-specific research on global and local mining trends, commodity prices, and trade dynamics.
Analyze government policies, tax regimes, and regulatory changes affecting the mining sector in Ethiopia and the region.
Monitor global supply-demand trends for gold, and other relevant minerals and products of companies under the cluster to inform pricing and production strategies.
Investment & Feasibility Studies
Develop economic models to evaluate new mining projects, expansions, and joint ventures.
Perform cost-benefit analysis, NPV, IRR, and risk assessments for proposed investments.
Support mergers, acquisitions, and partnerships with data-driven economic insights.
Forecasting & Strategic Planning
Prepare short-term and long-term economic forecasts to guide business planning and budgeting.
Assess currency fluctuations, inflation, and fiscal policies impacting the operations of companies under the mining cluster.
Collaborate with the Project, Finance and PME team to align economic analysis with corporate strategy.
Policy & Stakeholder Engagement
Advise senior leadership on economic risks and opportunities in the mining sector.
Participate in industry forums, government dialogues, and economic policy discussions.
Prepare white papers, policy briefs, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
ESG & Sustainability Economics
Evaluate the economic impact of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) initiatives in the operations of companies under the mining cluster.
Assess community development programs and their long-term economic benefits
Qualifications & Experience
Education: Master’s or PhD in Economics, Development Economics, Mineral Economics, or related field.
Experience: 8+ years in economic analysis, preferably in mining, natural resources, or financial consulting.
Technical Skills:
Advanced econometric modeling, statistical software (Stata, Python, EViews).
Strong Excel, financial valuation, and scenario analysis expertise.
Knowledge of mining industry economics, commodity markets, and Ethiopian/East African economic policies.
Language: Fluency in English and Amharic (additional languages a plus).
