Job Description

The Social Worker is responsible for providing psychosocial support, counseling, and personal development programs to beneficiaries. This includes overseeing extracurricular activities, student clubs, and sports initiatives, as well as facilitating mental, character, and mindset development. The Social Worker works closely with other staff to ensure beneficiaries receive holistic support, contributes to data collection and review, and assists in facilitating the Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) program. Additionally, the Social Worker plays a key role in beneficiary screening and intake.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Beneficiary Selection and Data Collection

  • Participate in beneficiary selection and admission alongside other program staff.

  • Go home-to-home to investigate families eligible for admission according to government referral and intake criteria.

  • Fully fill out intake and assessment forms.

  • Document family stories and backgrounds.

  • Assess and investigate the eligibility of the beneficiaries according to set criteria.

  • Interview and review beneficiary background information and properly document it in the beneficiary intake form.

  • Maintain detailed records on beneficiary progress, challenges, and support provided.

  • Collect and review community worker data to improve program implementation.

  • Collaborate with the Livelihood Technical Assistant and Educational Technical Assistant to address holistic needs of beneficiaries.

Psychosocial Support & Counseling:

  • Conduct individual, family, and group counseling sessions for child (and family) beneficiaries, addressing emotional, social, and behavioral challenges including home-to-home visits and also center sessions.

  • Develop and implement strategies for supporting children with trauma, stress, and other psychosocial concerns.

  • Track beneficiaries’ ongoing behavioral changes; fill out forms/reports on changes and developments in beneficiary behavior.

  • Conduct follow-up counseling as needed until behavior and character issues positively change.

  • Ensure that children and families are taking proper care of school and personal materials including clothing, backpacks, and shoes.

  • Provide training and guidance to staff on recognizing and addressing psychosocial issues among beneficiaries.

  • Refer beneficiaries to specialized mental health services when necessary and coordinate with external service providers.

  • Providing social and life skills training to students, helping them develop resilience, effective communication, decision-making, and conflict resolution skills.

Extracurricular Programs & Clubs:

  • Organize and oversee extracurricular activities, student clubs, and sports programs that support social and personal development.

  • Participate in weekly beneficiary mentorship/leadership/tutorial program.

  • Train and mentor club leaders and volunteers to ensure engaging, well-structured activities.

  • Monitor participation and impact of extracurricular programs, adjusting strategies as needed.

Character & Mindset Development:

  • Implement workshops and mentorship programs focused on self-esteem, leadership, resilience, and social skills for child and adult beneficiaries.

  • Prepare and provide trainings and education on matters of teambuilding, leadership, ethics, maintaining personal hygiene, how to care for oneself, and maintaining and keeping personal health.

  • Facilitate discussions and training on ethics, discipline, and positive behavior reinforcement.

  • Collaborate with the Educational Technical Assistant to integrate character development into the educational curriculum.

Adolescent Girls Program:

  • Facilitate in new school and student screening and surveying as necessary.

  • Facilitate in reforming the school’s gender club.

  • Facilitate in giving Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management awareness training for students, gender club members, and teachers, as well as any other relevant trainings under this program.

  • In participation with the gender club, create a three-month gender club meeting, discussion, and training plan.

  • Help the gender club carry out this three-month plan, and hand over the program to gender club at the end of the plan.

  • Facilitate and support the distribution of MHM kits and monitor their use and impact.

  • Collaborate with the Educational Technical Assistant to integrate MHM education into school-based programs.

  • Create exit strategy to hand over MHM program to the school.

  • Perform periodic monitoring follow-ups to observe the progress of the gender club.  

Reporting & Documentation:

  • Maintain case files and progress reports for each beneficiary receiving psychosocial support.

  • Continuously update child and guardian profiles ensuring that all information is present and up to date.

  • Contribute to program reports by documenting success stories, challenges, and recommendations.

  • Provide feedback and insights for improving psychosocial support and extracurricular programs.

  • Perform regular follow ups of activities, maintain accurate records/documentation, and prepare relevant reports, including communicating with school teachers, beneficiary families, government stakeholders, and administration for accurate and updated student information.

General Responsibilities

  • Perform other duties to be assigned by the program coordinator or administrative management of the organization.

  • Maintain accurate records of beneficiaries, training sessions, attendance records, and program activities.

  • Collaborate with other program staff to ensure integrated support for beneficiaries.

  • Coordinate with other program staff in relevant activities including food and materials distributions and information gathering.

  • Prepare and submit weekly and monthly activity reports.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning and professional development by participating in relevant training and workshops.

  • Uphold the values and policies of PATH Ministries International in all interactions with students, families, and community members.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, Education, or related fields

  • 3+ years of relevant experience in woman and child protection and related fields

  • Direct case management experience working with impoverished and vulnerable women and children

  • Demonstrated flexibility and creativity in planning and problem solving

Skills and Qualifications

  • High competency in time management and usage of time management tools and resources

  • Physical ability to give frequent trainings and to go into the field, often on foot, to visit beneficiaries in their residences and places of work

  • Intermediate and above proficiency in the following computer skills:

    • Microsoft Word

    • Microsoft Excel

    • Microsoft PowerPoint

  • Ability to prepare field reports and write letters 

  • Fluency in Amharic and Afan Oromo

  • Excellence in written English

Preferred Skills

  • Proficiency/experience in various surveying and data collection software (like Kobo Toolbox)

  • Training or Certification in Entrepreneurship

  • Excellence in spoken English

  • Typing

During a shift, social workers are expressly forbidden to engage in behavior that goes against PATH ethics including but not limited to:

  • Drinking alcohol, chewing chat, smoking, stealing property

  • Verbally or physically abusing staff, volunteers, guests, or beneficiaries. This includes the express prohibition of hitting beneficiary children for any reason.
