ABOUT WASHINGTON HEALTHCARE:
Washington Healthcare Plc (WHC) is a specialized secondary care facility in Addis Ababa, providing quality and affordable healthcare to local and international communities. Managed by experienced Ethiopian, American, and visiting doctors, WMC opened in January 2015 and has since served over 120,000 patients. Initially an internal medicine specialty center, it offers 24-hour care with US and Ethiopian-trained doctors in sub-specialties like cardiology, neurology, and oncology. The center plans to expand into a multi-specialty service and ultimately a tertiary care hospital and medical school.
Position Summary
The Medical/Public health Microbiologist is responsible for performing, interpreting, and reporting microbiological tests in accordance with ISO 15189 standards. The role ensures that laboratory practices maintain the highest levels of accuracy, reliability, and quality in diagnosing infectious diseases. The microbiologist contributes to the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the laboratory's quality management system.
Perform microbial testing (culture, identification, sensitivity testing, Serological, and molecular methods) on clinical specimens.
Ensure appropriate use of laboratory equipment and techniques in line with ISO 15189 requirements.
Validate and verify new test methods, instruments, and reagents.
Monitor and interpret test results, ensuring accuracy, reproducibility, and timeliness.
Quality Management
Adhere to ISO 15189 standards for quality and competence in medical laboratories.
Participate in internal and external quality assurance (IQA/EQA) programs.
Contribute to non-conformance investigations and implement corrective/preventive actions.
Assist in maintaining and updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's).
Maintain accurate and complete documentation as per quality system requirements.
Compliance & Accreditation
Ensure laboratory practices meet all relevant regulatory, safety, and accreditation requirements.
Prepare for and participate in audits and assessments (internal and external).
Maintain confidentiality and integrity of patient and laboratory information.
Training & Development
Train and mentor junior staff and laboratory technologists in microbiology techniques and quality standards.
Participate in continuing professional development and stay updated with advancements in microbiology and laboratory accreditation.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s degree in Medical or Public Health Microbiology, with 1 to 5 years of relevant professional experience.
Proven knowledge and hands-on experience with ISO 15189 standards and laboratory accreditation procedures.
Key Competencies:
Strong knowledge of clinical microbiology, including bacteriology, virology, mycology, and other department professions and analytical thinking and attention to detail.
