Duty Station: Surma Woreda, West Omo Zone

Required Number      1 (one) 

Main Responsibilities:    

  • Under the overall guidance and supervision of the Zonal Project Coordinator, the Woreda Coordinator works closely with the district health office and is responsible for planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating program activities in the district, including health education, awareness-raising, surveillance, rumor investigation, case containment, training, documenting and reporting activities, and delivering program results. 

  • Collects, updates, analyzes, and maintains information required to plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate program activities and conduct risk assessment and analysis to identify villages and kebeles at risk of receiving imported cases and intensifies surveillance and awareness raising activities. 

  • Conducts and supports health education and awareness raising activities through household visits, as well as visits in schools, markets, places of worship, and other places where people congregate.

  • Organizes and conducts video shows and cash reward announcements.  Ensures distribution of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials and placement of Guinea worm disease (GWD) and reward posters and banners in health facilities, schools, offices, markets, villages, places of worship, and other places where people congregate.

  • Conducts passive case search with health facilities, including household visits, as well as in schools, markets, places of worship, and other places where nomadic or migratory people or others congregate.

  • Coordinates, facilitates, and supports GWD case search as part the existing public health programs, such as immunization, mass drug administration, malaria chemoprevention, and other campaigns.

  • Facilitates and supports timely submission of weekly Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) reports that incorporated GWD from health posts to health centers and from health centers and hospitals to district health offices. 

  • Conducts weekly review and analysis of IDSR reports and monthly health management information system reports, to verify the presence or absence of any suspected case of GWD.

  • Registers and investigates all rumors and suspected cases of GWD within 24 hours of receiving reports. If clinically confirmed case is detected, carries out activities detailed in the EDEP standard operating procedure.

  • Organizes and conducts trainings for and supervises health and non-health staff and community volunteers to carry out and document GWD surveillance and awareness raising activities.

  • Conducts sensitization sessions for health and non-health staff and community members as part of supportive supervision to health facilities, kebeles, during trainings, workshops, and meetings organized by various governmental and nongovernmental organizations.

  • Ensures appropriate documentation of Guinea worm disease surveillance and all program activities.

  • Archives all essential documents and reports for eventual certification.

  • Prepares and submits quality reports on time and other ad-hoc reports as requested by supervisors.

  • In addition, the Woreda Coordinator is responsible for the supervision and management of TCC-E financial and material resources in his/her assigned woreda.

  • Performs other activities as instructed by the supervisor.

Job Requirements

Qualification:            

  • BSc degree in public health, health promotion, social science, or other development-related fields

Experience:              

  • Minimum 3 years’ relevant experience with demonstrated ability and understanding of fieldwork and community-directed health programs.

  • NGO Experience is preferable.    

Additional Requirements:  

  • A person who is a self-starter, who can accomplish the task with minimal or no supervision.

  • Bilingual: Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, Amharic and local languages of the duty station.

  • Prior work experience in the region

  • Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office and data management

  • Able to present a recommendation letter from the most recent employer
