With develoPPP, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) promotes private-sector activities where entrepreneurial opportunities and development policy potential meet. Companies that want to invest sustainably in a developing and emerging country and expand their local operations can receive financial and technical support under the programme.
GIZ partners with Sebeta Agroindustry PLC in order to improve livelihoods of actors among the Ethiopian dairy value chain. The project aims to establish and capacitate six dairy cooperatives with milk collection centers (MCC) in the Oromia North Shewa Zone. It places a strong emphasis on empowering smallholder farmers through training programs for improved milk production, farm management, and organic fertilizer production from cow manure trough vermicomposting. Promoting sustainable agricultural practices through training in integrated soil fertility management (ISFM) with a focus on vermicomposting manure for fodder production This community-centered approach places rural stakeholders at the heart of the supply chain, promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Additionally, the project anticipates creating urban employment opportunities for women and youth in dairy sales and distribution. Sebeta Agro Industry's overarching goal, under the brand "Mama Milk," is to address the lack of accessible dairy facilities in Ethiopia's remote and rural areas, thereby bridging infrastructural gaps in milk preservation
In discussion with the team take responsibility for parts of the implementation, content of trainings, field supervision, and knowledge management. Also contribute to aggregation, validation, evaluation and publication of data/results, knowledge management.
All tasks related to feeding and especially to raise awareness about the importance of feeding for milk production. One focus area will be the importance of forages and fodders as basis for production and feed as additive where necessary as opposed to the current scheme of very poor basic rations and high substitution with feed leading to high production prices.
Tasks
The adviser will work in close coordination with Sebeta PLC (Mama Milk), the project staffs, Soil matters project (another partnering GIZ project) federal- and regional-level and the German coordination unit
Support the design, co-ordination, planning, and execution, of various activities like community mobilization, trainings on fodder production and ration formulation, field days, surveys, workshops etc. (especially with the woreda offices of agriculture in Oromia)
Provide technical advice and expertise on dairy development, forage and fodder production, comparing nutritional value vs economy, ration formulation, agribusiness, ISFM to all partners involved (BoA Oromia, WoA livestock and Natural resource management, Sebeta, dairy cooperatives amongst others)
Coordinate and organize field trips and facilitate communication between all actors
Prepare local subsidy contracts and implementation protocols jointly with partners
Follow up on documentation and monitoring processes.
Coordinate external consultants and reviewers’ missions to the field/partners.
Support compile regular reports and communicate key findings to the appropriate agencies.
Closely interact and work with GIZ staff, other GIZ staff responsible for climate change action, other agency staff and government partners
Supervise printing, storage, and inventory of PR material, as well as supporting the development of fact sheets, brochures, and other communication materials.
Assist in preparing, implementing, and documenting training events, workshops, forums, team meetings and other project activities in collaboration with partner institution.
Assist in preparing Terms of Reference (ToR) for contracts for technical implementation.
Perform other assignments as required
Qualifications
Master’s degree in animal production, animal nutrition, agricultural, agribusiness management or related fields
Fluency in Afaan Oromoo, Amharic and English
Professional experience
At least 7 years professional experience in livestock nutrition, minimum of 4 years of professional experience in GIZ or a comparable organization
Experience in the private sector especially for a feed mill or similar businesses a plus
Other knowledge, additional competences
Effective communication, including writing, speaking and interpersonal communication.
Excellent customer service and client relations skills
Organization and time management skills
Good collaboration and teamwork abilities
Ability to work in fast-paced environment.
Ability to use computer and software’s and technologies for data collection and organization (especially Excel skills)
