The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was founded in 1970 through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations, seconded by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. The Institute got its name from the Norwegian physician, Gerhard Henrik Armauer Hansen, who first described the leprosy bacillus (Mycobacterium leprae).AHRI is a biomedical Research studies, Vaccine, and Traditional Medicine research institute that works in developing tools for research studies, Vaccine, prevention, control, and treatment of neglected tropical diseases and other diseases of public health importance through applied, basic biomedical research, research studies, and training.
Conduct bacterial culture, antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST), and molecular techniques as part of AHRI research projects.
Supervise fieldwork activities, including data collection, site monitoring, and sample handling.
Provide training and mentorship to new staff, interns, and students engaged in MSc or PhD thesis projects.
Perform analysis and interpretation of bacterial culture results and molecular characterizations.
Ensure the implementation of internal and external quality control measures in laboratory procedures.
Participate in laboratory accreditation efforts, including compliance with ISO 15189:2022 standards.
Prepare and submit research findings to the Principal Investigator, sponsors, and funding agencies.
Strictly follow laboratory safety protocols and ethical research guidelines.
Maintain and ensure the proper functioning of laboratory equipment through routine care and daily maintenance.
Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to undertake additional tasks as required by the project or institution.
Qualifications:
MSc in Medical Microbiology, Biomedical Sciences, or Applied Microbiology
Experience:
Minimum of 10 years of overall professional experience in biomedical sciences, and at least 5 years of research experience in bacteriology-related research activity.
A minimum of 4 years of relevant experience after obtaining the MSc degree.
Five (5) publication points is mandatory.
Proven experience in research related to Medical Microbiology, Bacteriology Culture, Molecular techniques, antimicrobial resistance, One Health approach research, and actively engaged in Basic clinical research and development.
Solid background in research laboratory, quality management system, laboratory coordination, and Guideline development.
A track record of scientific publications must have five publications points.
Investigative Skills: Identifying problems, assessing risks, defining expected / potential results, inspecting specimens, and cataloging information.
Research / Quantitative Skills: Defining problems, designing experiments, utilizing laboratory equipment, using computers for computation/simulation, conducting studies, recording observations, interpreting results, utilizing statistical tests to predict outcomes, and preparing statistical reports.
Communication Skills: Writing research proposals, contributing to teams, summarizing research findings, and explaining complex ideas for technical and nontechnical audiences.
Analytical Thinking: Break down complex problems and data into manageable parts, categorize and evaluate information logically, make informed projections, and organize findings effectively.
