Job Description

The Armauer Hansen Research Institute (AHRI) was founded in 1970 through the initiative of the Norwegian and Swedish Save the Children organizations seconded by the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia. The Institute joined the Ethiopian Ministry of Health in 2004 and in 2016 it became a government health agency under the Council of Ministers Regulation No.376/2016. Furthermore, the institute has a network of national and international collaborators in peer-reviewed grant projects, clinical trial partnerships, capacity-building activities, and training of MSc and PhD students.

The Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases Research (MNTD) Division of AHRI has secured different grants on malaria that have qualitative study work packages. These studies will be implemented in different selected study sites throughout the country. The qualitative study focuses on exploring explore community understanding about malaria prevention mechanisms, utilization of prevention tools, local practices, illness and treatment experiences, and socioecological factors related to malaria.  in the study areas and explore the acceptability of the treatment in the community and health professionals. 

Therefore, the MNTD Division is looking for self-driven, motivated, innovative, and energetic Researcher II_ Qualitative Study who can lead and coordinate the overall qualitative studies of different malaria projects and perform tasks related to formative researches. 

Description of Roles and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will coordinate the qualitative study team and work closely with the project team members. The Researcher II is expected to perform the following tasks. 

  • Coordinating and leading the qualitative studies of different malaria projects

  • Develop the study protocol and get ethical approval from IRB and concerned authorities

  • Design qualitative data collection instruments and integrate with the electronic data collection system (REDCap) 

  • Identify and engage stakeholders who are residing around the study areas to create sense of ownership and harmonized environment during project implementation.

  • Design stakeholders engagement and embedment strategies and receive their consent/assent for the qualitative data collection

  • Creating and maintaining good rapport with people in the communities hosting the study. 

  • Organize the qualitative study team, train on the project objectives and data collection instruments before they start the data collection activities and supervise their day to day activities

  • Monitor the quality of collected qualitative data on real-time bases and take corrective actions whenever there is any error or deviation.

  • Monitor the quality of the transcription and translation of qualitative data and let the data collectors take corrective actions on real-time bases 

  • Prepare periodic progress reports and submit to the PI and partners (if required)

  • Perform qualitative coding and analysis using different software 

  • Prepare manuscripts to be published in peer reviewed journals

  • Ensure that all the qualitative data is entered to the REDCap system on real-time bases

  • Train junior researchers on different data coding and analysis techniques and software 

  • Identify the required materials and tools for the qualitative study and ensure their timely delivery to the study team

  • Liaison between the data collectors and the project coordinator and the PI

  • Perform other duties of the PI as required

Job Requirements

Qualifications and experience

  • PhD degree Sociology, Psychology- Epidemiology or other Social Science fields 

  • At least 3 years of relevant professional experience in qualitative data collection, transcription, translation, coding, analysis and report writing. 

  • The applicants must have six (6) publications point and they should list their publications in their CV with appropriate links

Desired Skills and Competences:

  • Proven experience in qualitative data analysis tools and software

  • Experience in leading the qualitative studies on health projects 

  • Team building and teamwork 

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills of English 

  • Stakeholder mapping and engagement skills

Positions available: 1 (one) 

Duty station: Addis Ababa

Salary: as per the organization scale

Terms of employment: one year contract period with full time employment basis with possibility of extension based on performance and budget availability
