Job Description

Brooke’s work across Africa, Asia and Latin America transforming the lives of animals and people in the communities we serve. We are part way through our 2022-25 global strategy.

The Brooke has been working in Ethiopia since 2006 with a country office in Addis Ababa. The Brooke aims to improve the welfare of working equines, together with the livelihoods of people dependant on these animals. Currently we are working in 4 regions and 5 veterinary teaching institutions and with partnerships. 

Our vision is of a world in which working horses, donkeys and mules are free from suffering and have a life worth living.

Our mission is to achieve immediate and lasting change to the lives of working horses, donkeys and mules and the communities that depend on them.

The Livelihoods & Animal Welfare Programme Coordinator will be responsible for supporting the Head of Programme to further develop and embed livelihood related interventions into the Brooke Ethiopia existing AW interventions as outlined in the JD role. 

In order to achieve this, the role of Livelihoods & Animal Welfare integration into its Programmes are crucial. 

Job title:  Gender and livelihood Project Coordinator

Location:  Brooke Ethiopia (BE) Regional Coordination Offices, Hawasa (with frequent travel to the field)

Reports to:  Head of Programme and operations: this position will require regular interaction between Regional and Field Teams, other Senior Leadership Team (SLT) members and Brooke UK.

Main Purpose of the Job:    

The Gender and Livelihood Project Coordinator focuses on integrating gender equality in designing, planning, implementing, and monitoring programmes to promote gender equality and sustainable livelihoods to improve animal welfare. This role supports Brooke’s gender transformative approach to animal welfare. The coordinator will innovate and adopt best practices and adapt strategies to meet evolving challenges in meeting animal welfare. This position offers the opportunity to drive systemic change and engage directly with staff and communities to build resilient futures, empowering and creating equity for better animal welfare and livelihoods. 

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Integrated Program Design & Implementation 

    • Conduct gender sensitive vulnerability, context and trend analysis that affects animal welfare and resilient livelihoods of equine reliant women and men communities. 

    • Conduct gender and livelihood gap analysis, and integrate gender and livelihood into existing AW programmes 

    • Co-design gender responsive and inclusive approaches to empower women, young women and men, and persons with disabilities who rely on working with equines for their livelihoods.  Ensure that they have equal and equitable opportunities to access resources and services that contribute to their animals’ welfare and their own livelihoods. 

    •  Demonstrate that livelihood initiatives and diversified income-generating activities have direct implications on animal welfare and contributes to gender equality to achieve sustainable outcomes. 

    • Ensures that the necessary support is provided to projects in the process of developing annual plans and through implementation process.

    • Facilitate participatory approaches to programme planning, implementation and monitoring are used when working with communities. 

    • Conduct training sessions and workshops to strengthen the capacity of local partners and staff in gender transformative programming in animal welfare or livestock projects/programmes. 

  • Technical Leadership and Capacity Building in Livelihoods and Gender and Animal Welfare 

    • Train staff and communities on promotion of alternative livelihoods to improve resilience to various shocks and hazards 

    • Provide guidance on livelihoods approaches, value chain development, and financial inclusion. 

    • Conduct capacity-building trainings on livelihoods methodologies.   

    • Conduct capacity-building trainings on gender equality key concepts, theories and methodologies.   

    • Integrate disaster risk reduction (DRR programming into AW interventions activities through equine dependent communities’ participation).  

    • Adapt global tools in to local contexts.  

    • Act as a focal point for livelihoods related working groups and initiatives 

  • Stakeholder Coordination and Engagement

    • Coordinate Livelihoods integration activities with local and national initiatives like animal health services, agriculture and extension departments, ministry of women and social affairs, private sector actors and partners NGOs with which Brooke has an engagement with. 

    • Develop advocate materials for animal welfare policies in national livelihood strategies.  

  • Monitoring & Reporting 

    • Track process and impact indicators on income diversification from equine and none equine related enterprises.  

    • Demonstrate how these are translated into addressing gender inequality better livelihoods and AW improvements

    • Quarterly document success stories related to the role

    • Draft donor reports and ensure compliance. 

  • General

    • Perform such additional tasks as may reasonably be required by the Head of Programme

    • In undertaking the role, comply with all Brooke global and country policies and procedures.

    • The role requires regular in-country travel. 

    • It requires flexibility, cultural sensitivity, and a commitment to improving the lives of equines and vulnerable equine reliant communities

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

Desirable

  • Degree or Master’s degree in Development Studies, Gender, Agriculture, Economics, Monitoring and Evaluation or related field

  • 5+ years in livelihoods and gender programming (humanitarian or development settings with animal welfare components)

  • Technical knowledge on policy changes and trends in gender, livelihood and animal welfare focused programming.

  • Technical knowledge of livestock value chains and emergency respons

  • Proven experience in programme/project development

  • Proven experience in report writing

  • Ability to work independently and think innovatively and strategically, as well as work collaboratively

  • Proven experience of Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) and its application within annual planning processes

  • Commitment and enthusiasm for the Brooke’s mission and values in promoting equine welfare

  • Knowledge of basic Animal Welfare (AW) concepts and the importance of working equines to households / the economy.                        

  • Knowledge of human behaviour change approach to support sustainable behviour change
