Job Description
Kurmuk Gold Mine PLC (KGM), a subsidiary of Allied Gold Corp., a publicly listed company on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX), is engaged in gold mining operations across multiple countries, including Ethiopia, Mali, and Côte d'Ivoire. KGM operates with a Large-Scale Gold Mining License and holds three contiguous Exploration Licenses.
The project is strategically located in western Ethiopia, approximately 750 km from Addis Ababa and about 90 km northwest of Assosa, within the Benishangul-Gumuz Regional State. KGM is actively involved in both mine development and exploration activities at the site.
Reporting to the Environment Superintendent, KGM is seeking to employ a dedicated, experienced and self-motivated individual to fill the position of Environment Supervisor to ensure that mining operations comply with environmental regulations, policies, and standards, and to oversee environmental monitoring, implementing and maintaining environmental management systems, and leading efforts to mitigate environmental risks.
Without being exhaustive, the responsibilities include:
Environmental Management System (EMS): Develop, implement, and monitor the company's EMS to ensure compliance with permits, licenses, and other regulatory requirements.
Environmental Monitoring: Coordinate and oversee environmental monitoring activities, including data collection and analysis.
Risk Management: Identify, assess, and mitigate environmental risks associated with mining operations.
Compliance: Ensure compliance with all relevant environmental regulations and permits.
Reporting: Support internal and external reporting on environmental performance.
Training and Communication: Conduct environmental awareness training for employees and stakeholders.
Incident Investigation: Investigate environmental incidents and implement corrective actions.
Stakeholder Engagement: Develop and maintain relationships with stakeholders, including First Nations groups, government agencies, and community organizations.
Permitting and Licensing: Assist in the development and maintenance of permits and licenses related to environmental regulations.
Process Improvement: Identify areas for improvement in environmental performance and implement changes to enhance efficiency and minimize environmental impact.
Qualifications, Experience and Skills:
A tertiary degree/diploma in Environmental Science or related field from a recognised institution
Supervisory Skills Training Certificate will be an added advantage
Valid international drivers licence
Minimum 3 years of experience supervising an Environment team preferably in the mining industry
Strong understanding of environmental regulations, permits, and standards, as well as familiarity with environmental management systems (e.g., ISO 14001).
Experience in ERP systems and basic Excel skills
Proficiency in data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
Ability to identify and solve environmental problems, conduct investigations, and implement corrective actions.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills are essential for effectively working with diverse teams and stakeholders.
Written and spoken English and Amharic
Able to work within tight timelines, maintaining accuracy and efficiency of assigned tasks
