Job Description
Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is a local non-governmental developmental and humanitarian Organization established in 2007 to ensure a brighter future for children, youth & women, by tackling root causes of poverty. ESD is operating its programs in 6 regions: Amhara, Oromia, Sidama, Debub Ethiopia, Central Ethiopia and Benishangul Gumuz regional states focusing on six thematic areas; Early Childhood development, Women and Girls empowerment, Quality Education development, Youth Skills Development and Job Creation, Environment Protection and Renewable Energy, and Humanitarian Response and Recovery.

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is committed to achieving workforce diversity in terms of profession, gender, and other aspects of diversity. Currently, ESD is seeking a dedicated and dynamic Education Officer to contribute to the implementation of the Education in Emergencies Pilot Projects to address urgent educational needs for displaced and emergency-affected children in the Benishangul Gumuz Region. The objective of this project is to improve access to safe, protective, and inclusive emergency primary education for the emergency affected and displaced children in Benishangul Gumuz regions of Ethiopia. This initiative is led by Finn Church Aid (FCA) in partnership with Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). The Education Officer will play a crucial role in improve access to safe, protective, and inclusive primary education,
including children, teachers, and community members in Assosa Refugee Camps. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in educational management, particularly in humanitarian contexts, with an emphasis on teacher training, gender equality, and inclusive education. The successful candidate will report directly to the FCA Accelerated Education Program (AEP) officer in the Assosa in Benishangul Gumuz Region Program Area. Responsibilities will include planning, implementing, coordinating, monitoring, evaluating, and reporting on program and project activities.
The Education Officer will execute the following major functions:
Facilitate community sensitization initiatives to promote enrollment of Out of School Children (OOSC), with special emphasis on girls and children with disabilities.
Advocate for the right to education for all members of the community, ensuring that the unique needs of marginalized groups are addressed.
Conduct Teacher Trainings: Organize and lead training sessions in the Accelerated Education Programme (AEP) and Teachers in Crisis Context (TiCC) practices, equipping educators with the skills necessary to support OOSC effectively.
Ensure ongoing training and mentorship for teachers to foster professional growth and improve teaching quality in emergency contexts.
Facilitate training focused on Disaster Risk Reduction and child protection for teachers and school personnel, enhancing their capacity to respond to emergencies and create a safe learning environment.
Organize sessions aimed at educating parents and community members on child-friendly disaster risk reduction, child protection, and preparedness strategies to build community resilience.
Regularly consult with state and non-state actors and donor communities to advocate for a coordinated humanitarian response in the education sector, positioning FCA strategically within the EiE framework.
Provide input on the revision of national AEP principles and guidelines, ensuring the incorporation of Age, Gender, and Diversity (AGD) considerations and promoting AEP pathways to formal education.
Develop and implement monitoring tools and approaches to evaluate the effectiveness of education initiatives, gathering data on enrollment rates, teacher training outcomes, and community engagement levels.
Prepare regular project reports detailing progress, challenges, and lessons learned, ensuring accountability and informing future programming.
Work closely with local stakeholders to ensure effective project implementation and leverage existing community networks.
Actively engage in project coordination meetings to share insights, discuss challenges, and maintain alignment with project goals and objectives.
Collaborate with local communities, stakeholders, and organizations to raise awareness and promote participation in emergency education programs.
Regularly assess the effectiveness of educational programs, gather feedback from teachers, and report findings to the AEP officer for continuous improvement.
Work closely with the AEP officer and other team members to ensure a coordinated response to the educational needs of refugee during emergencies.
Develop project Terms of Reference for project activities.
Prepare project action plans and execute these plans in collaboration with program and project teams.
Engage relevant stakeholders in project planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation.
Utilize a collaborative, learning, and adaptive approach to continually assess project progress and communicate findings to program management.
Work closely with local government offices, schools, and communities.
Conduct regular project reporting.
Undertake any other assignments as directed by the organization.
Required Qualification
Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field
Minimum of 3 years of experience in an educational setting.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups.
Proficient in data analysis and report writing.
Fluency in English; proficiency in local languages is a plus.
Competency of working in a multicultural society
