Junior Energy Advisor, Productive Use of Energy and Electrification

Energising Development (EnDev) is an international flagship programme that promotes energy access. EnDev focuses on providing access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy to deliver social, economic, and environmental change in more than 20 developing countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. EnDev is currently financed by four donor countries: Germany, The Netherlands, Norway and Switzerland. In Ethiopia, EnDev is implemented, and coordinated by GIZ and supports sustainable energy access in two main components: Off-grid Rural Electrification and Clean Cooking. Target groups are lower-income households, social institutions, and small to medium sized enterprises, mostly in rural areas.
Endev Ethiopia is working closely with the Ministry of Water and Energy (MoWE) in the implementation of the programme, providing technical assistance and at the same time cooperating with other governmental and non-governmental organisations, private institutions and enterprises, as well as cooperatives and rural communities.
The Electrification Component is responsible to realise EnDev’s goal and objectives through support provided for the commercialisation of solar energy technologies. Capacity development is provided to the private businesses and their associations, government partners and other actors in the sector. Through financing and grant projects, households, social institutions and MSMEs are provided with sustainable electricity
Support the implementation of the component activities in close cooperation with the Senior Energy Advisor and the Electrification Component Manager.
Support the completion of the Sustainable Energy for Smallholder Farmers (SEFFA) initiative and other productive use of energy (PUE) activities of EnDev.
Support the implementation of a nano grids pilot activity that is to be implemented by a partner organisation.
Support planning, monitoring and evaluation (P&E) as well as knowledge management (KM) activities of EnDev, in collaboration with other project members.
Tasks
Technical support
Supports the finalisation of a solar grain hulling pilot project of EnDev/SEFFA.
Closely works with an EnDev partner organisation, which receives funding from EnDev, to pilot a nano grid to electrify a selected off-grid rural community of Ethiopia, with a strong focus on PUE applications.
Assists in other PUE initiatives of EnDev, including solar dryers.
Provides professional advice and technical assistance to, and cooperation with beneficiaries, stakeholders and partners for capacity development and technology transfer with respect to the electrification component initiatives.
Promotes market-based electrification through solar energy and other renewable energy technologies.
Prepares and implements training courses and other capacity building measures for solar companies and their associations, energy users (MSMEs and cooperatives), finance institutions as well as public institutions active in the sector.
Establishes and maintains smooth communication and cooperation with other EnDev and GIZ colleagues as well as with relevant partners in the public and private sectors.
Consults routinely with the Electrification Component Manager regarding project activities.
Knowledge management
Contributes to the collection, storing, processing and dissemination of information and knowledge products.
Supports the preparation of articles on case studies and best practices for publication in EnDev’s/GIZ’s website, social media channels or on other media outlets.
Supports the monitoring and evaluation unit to fulfil its role of systematic collection of data and processing used to refine and reinforce EnDev’s objectives and activities.
Other tasks
Ensures the use of office and transport and other facilities in accordance with GIZ rules.
Assists and/or carries out any other tasks as assigned by her/his supervisor or head of project or their delegates.
Qualifications
University Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Project Management, Economics, or other related fields from accredited academic institution.
Experience in the energy sector of, at least, 2 years.
Preference is given to experience in rural electrification, particularly for productive use of energy.
Strong qualities in interpersonal relationships and communication skills to be applied in a diverse cultural environment.
Availability to travel extensively throughout the country.
Ability to work independently.
Fluency in Amharic and English.
Knowledge in digital technologies, Microsoft applications (MS Word, Excel, Power Point) and knowledge of office 365 and virtual meeting technologies is an advantage
