With the financial support of Gates Foundation, Project HOPE has commenced implementing a research project “Pathways Ethiopia” in Nov 2023. The purpose of the project is to understand, reach and serve vulnerable populations in Ethiopia through applying the “Pathways” method https://www.projectpathways.org/about. Specific objectives include identifying factors that make Ethiopian women, their children and adolescents vulnerable to poor Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child Health, and Nutrition (RMNCHN) services utilization and health outcome, conducting population segmentation based on the key sources of vulnerability and intervening to effectively reach the vulnerable segments of the population. The project also envisions to build the modelling capacity within the Government of Ethiopia health system to nurture evidence-based PH decision making practice.
Project HOPE wants to employ qualified and experienced Regional Survey Coordinators for the Pathways for Ethiopia project as per the specifications provided below.
The primary role of the Regional Survey Coordinator is to coordinate all aspects of the field data collection activities in the assigned areas, ensuring quality, timeliness and adherence to survey protocols during the collection of household-level data from women of reproductive age (WRA) and adolescents. The coordinator will be responsible for planning, supervising and coordinating all survey activities, ensuring adherence to protocols and maintaining data quality. This role includes managing field teams, liaising with regional/woreda health bureaus and providing daily updates to the central survey coordination team.
Work with the pathways research team in planning and coordinating day-to-day activities of the pathways survey
Coordinate with regional health bureaus, woreda health offices and community leaders to facilitate smooth data collection
Secure administrative clearances at all levels (regional, woreda and local levels) before the data collection activity commences
Organize and oversee training for Field Supervisors and Enumerators in collaboration with the central survey team
Supervise and support Field Supervisors, ensuring they effectively manage their teams
Monitor fieldwork progress, troubleshoot operational challenges and provide timely solutions
Ensure that field staff adhere to survey protocols, ethical standards, and safety guidelines.
Provide technical support on the use of KoboToolBox
Work closely with the central quality control team to resolve data quality issues.
Work hand-in-hand with the Field Program Coordinator in managing logistics for field teams, including transportation, accommodation, supplies and equipment.
Ensure project deadlines are met
Provide daily updates and reports to the central coordination team
Contribute to the final fieldwork report summarizing achievements, challenges and recommendations.
Ensure resources are always available for the fieldwork
Attend technical meetings as necessary
Qualification and requirements:
Master’s degree in public health, Epidemiology, Statistics or a related field.
At least 10 years of experience in managing large-scale field surveys, preferably health-related.
Proven experience supervising multi-disciplinary field teams in diverse settings.
Strong knowledge of digital data collection platforms (e.g., KoboT oolbox, ODK).
Excellent planning, organizational and leadership skills.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build rapport with local officials and community members.
Fluency in English and at least one major local language (Amharic, Afan Oromo, Somali, Afarigna, Tigrigna, Sidama Afoo etc.).
Willingness to travel extensively within the assigned region and stay in remote locations.
Proven work experience as a Research Project Coordinator
Ability to work effectively as part of a team
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to work on tight deadlines
Strong organizational and multi-tasking skills
Work Conditions:
Field-based position with frequent travel to woredas and kebeles.
May involve working long hours, including weekends and holidays.
Must be able to work under pressure and in dynamic, sometimes challenging environments.
