Job Description

Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is looking for qualified candidates to fill the following position.

REPORT TO

Director, Strategic Engagement & Special Projects-PPD

DURATION

Open Contract/Indefinite PeriodSALARY RANGE

Gross monthly salary of ETB 25,756.00 - ETB 30,676.00 plus ETB 12,000.00 Housing allowance and ETB 3,300.00 Transport allowance, depending on candidates qualification, experience and earning history

 Purpose of the Job:

To enhance EHRC’s compliance with its obligations towards international and regional human rights mechanisms in accordance with the Paris Principles; advise EHRC on its international and regional engagement; and ensure representation of EHRC’s interests and views in engagement with regional and international human rights mechanisms.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Enhance EHRC’s collaboration with GANHRI and NANHRI, including attaining and maintaining EHRC’s standing before international and regional human rights mechanisms; 

  • Coordinate EHRC’s international and regional human rights engagement and ensure a holistic/synergized approach of engagement with the various regional and international human rights mechanisms;

  • Facilitate the work of the various directorates and thematic commissioners on their international and regional commitments and build their capacity where gaps are identified; 

  • Build overall capacity of EHRC on international and regional standards, processes, and developments;

  • Build capacity of EHRC, relevant state bodies, civil society, and other stakeholders on state reporting, including submission of alternative reports and monitoring on the implementation of recommendations on state reports;

  • Collaborate with Parliament, Attorney General’s Office, relevant state bodies, civil society, and other actors, on ratification, domestication, and implementation of international and regional human rights instruments; 

  • Enhance submission on the human rights situation in Ethiopia (general or thematic) to relevant international and regional human rights mechanisms; 

  • Ensure regular participation in the public sessions of relevant regional and international human rights mechanisms; 

  • Collaborate with key partners such as OHCHR-EARO, NANHRI, other NHRIs and civil society to organize joint activities; and

  • Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

Job Requirements

Qualifications and Experience:

  • LLM Human Rights Law or LLM, International Law

  • 6 years of experience working in international or regional human rights organizations or experience working closely with international or regional human rights organizations. 

  • Experience in engagement with regional and international human rights organizations. 

  • Well-versed with multiple thematic human rights areas. 

  • Ability to engage with actors from diverse cultural backgrounds. 

  • Good analytical, communication, coordination skills. 

  • Proficient computer skills. 

  • Proficiency in Amharic and English is required. Knowledge of other international working languages of inter-governmental organizations is advantageous.
