Job Description

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a global service provider in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development dedicated to shaping a future worth living around the world. As a public-benefit federal enterprise, GIZ supports the German Government – in particular the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) – and many public and private sector clients in achieving their objectives in international cooperation in around 120 countries.

Since 2004, GIZ has been a reliable and trusted partner of the African Union (AU) to enhance inclusive growth and sustainable development on the African continent in line with the AU’s Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want. With more than 260 team members, GIZ African Union cooperates with the AU Commission, as well as the AU’s specialised institutions and agencies, such as the Development Agency AUDA-NEPAD, at continental, regional and national level in more than 40 member states. Key areas of engagement include Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention, Governance, Sustainable Economic Growth, Health and Social Development, as well as Just Transition. 

This recruitment covers up to Seven internships in the following GIZ African Union teams:

  • The GIZ African Union Office provides services and support in the areas of procurement, financial management, events and travel, human resources, internal operations, communication and portfolio management to all GIZ projects implemented in partnership with the African Union. 

  • The “Promotion of Human Rights and Empowerment of Women in Africa (AWARE)” project improves the ability of the AU, its member states and other actors to implement continental commitments on human rights and gender equality.

  • The “Strengthening Advisory Capacities for Land Governance in Africa (SLGA)” project supports African institutions and professionals to implement improved land policies that protect the rights of marginalised groups, including smallholder farmers, pastoralists, and women.

  • The “Support to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA)” project creates and consolidates the framework conditions for implementing the Agreement establishing the AfCFTA.

The “Green Infrastructure Corridors for Intra-African Trade (Support to PIDA)” project provides advisory support for the African Union to improve technical capabilities to implement low 

  • carbon and climate-resilient infrastructure projects and promote cross-border trade.

  • The “Boosting the Rights of Individuals with Disabilities in Africa (BRIDGE)” project supports continental and regional federations of organisations of persons with disabilities to represent their interests in development processes.

  • The “Resilience Initiative Africa (RIA)” project supports regional, national, local state and non-state actors in State and non-state actors in identifying and addressing risks, enhancing risk-informed urban development and disaster risk management across Africa. 

All projects are commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ); the AfCFTA project is cofinanced by the European Union and Sweden.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The internships are focused on supporting the teams’ communication and outreach work, specifically: 

  • Event Support: Provide logistical and conceptual support for workshops, events, and team meetings

  • Data Management: Maintain and organise contact lists, portfolio information, and communication materials

  • Content Creation: Assist in drafting and designing social media posts, newsletters, and other communication products

  • Research and Analysis Support: Prepare concise and visually appealing briefs, presentations, or reports on key topics in the AU context

The internship with the AWARE project also includes Monitoring & Evaluation of project activities.

All the positions include occasional administrative support to the team

Job Requirements:

Qualifications

  • Graduates who finished their studies within the last six months a degree in International Relations, Political Science, Communications, African Studies, or a related field

  • Knowledge or strong interest in AU policies or international development is an advantage

  • Candidates must be allowed to reside and work in Ethiopia; GIZ cannot facilitate the necessary permits

Other knowledge, additional competencies

  • Strong proficiency in English is essential. Knowledge of other AU working languages is an advantage

  • Ability to conduct online research, analyse data, and synthesise complex information

  • Strong writing and editing abilities to create clear, concise, and engaging materials

  • Proficiency in MS Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail

  • Proactive, resourceful, and eager to learn

  • A team player with a collaborative mindset and the ability to work independently
