Job Description

Light for the World is a global development organization. We empower people with disabilities and enable eye health services in low-income countries. Over the last three decades we improved health systems, enabled education for all, and amplified the voices of people with disabilities. We focus on the poorest and hardest to reach because that’s where we will have the biggest impact.

Our programmes include:

•    Eye Health – preventing blindness and promoting eye health for all.
•    Inclusive Education – ensuring children with disabilities receive quality, inclusive education.
•    Inclusive Economic Empowerment – ensuring that barriers are removed for men and women with disabilities to access decent work. 
In Ethiopia, our country strategy for the year 2021-2025 focuses on Eye Health, Inclusive Economic Empowerment, Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), Inclusive Education and Humanitarian Action. Advocacy and disability inclusion are cross cutting theme.  Currently, Light for the World Ethiopia is supporting projects in Addis Ababa City Administration, Amhara, Tigray, Oromia, Sidama, and SNNP regions.

Light for the world therefore seeks the services of an experienced and self-driven person to lead this innovative and ambitious project hence the vacancy below.

Job Title: Data Officer
Contract length: up to 31 Dec 2025 with the possibility of extension on project fund availability
Location: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Job Purpose
The Data Officer will support the national efforts to eliminate Onchocerciasis and Lymphatic Filariasis by ensuring high-quality data collection, management, and reporting across field surveys, treatment campaigns, and laboratory testing. The officer will play a key role in managing and validating epidemiological and programmatic data collected during mass drug administration (MDA), entomological and parasitological surveys, and monitoring activities.

Key Responsibilities

Data Collection and Management
•    Compile and manage data related to onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis elimination programs (mainly on field activities, surveys, and treatment campaigns and laboratory tests).
•    Develop and maintain databases and information systems (developing data tracking system) to monitor program performance, track progress and support decision-making processes.
•    Support the implementation of electronic data collection tools and provide training to field staff on electronic data collection tools using electronic devices.  
•    Participate in field surveillance activities to gather relevant data, support field teams and ensure quality data collection.
Monitoring Field Activities
•    Participate in the planning and monitoring of treatment campaigns and surveys 
•    Track and verify drug distribution data during surveys, including coverage validation and non-compliance tracking.
•    Assist in real-time field supervision and troubleshooting of digital data tools during fieldwork.
Laboratory Data Handling
•    Coordinate with laboratory technicians to ensure timely and correct entry of lab results 
•    Organize and maintain laboratory data in secure and retrievable formats.
•    Work with the M&E team to cross-validate lab and field data.
Data Quality Assurance
•    Conduct data quality assessments and validation to ensure integrity and reliability of data collected from various areas.
•    Support data cleaning and correction in collaboration with zonal/district health offices.
•    Prepare data quality reports and recommendations.
Reporting and Analysis
•    Prepare detailed reports, visualizations, and presentations on program indicators and trends for program teams, stakeholders and donors when required.
•    Compile and summarize programmatic data for weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports.
•    Support preparation of data for donors and Ministry of Health reports.
•    Generate basic visualizations (charts, maps, dashboards) to aid in program decision-making.
Collaboration and Communication
•    Collaborate with national and subnational NTD focal persons and implementing partners.
•    Participate in coordination meetings and share updates on data-related issues.
•    Ensure all data complies with data protection and confidentiality protocols.

 Job Requirements

Qualifications and Experience
•    BSC/ MSC in in Public Health, Statistics, Health Informatics, Epidemiology, or related field.
•    Minimum 3/1-year experience respectively in health data management, preferably in NTDs or public health programs.
•    Experience with MDA campaigns, parasitological/entomological surveys, and/or disease mapping is highly desirable.
•    Proficiency in Excel, ODK, DHIS2, or other data platforms is required.
•    Familiarity with WHO NTD reporting standards and indicators is a plus.
Key Competencies
•    Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data handling.
•    Ability to train and support field teams in data collection tools.
•    Strong communication and teamwork skills.
•    Comfortable working in remote or rural field settings.
•    Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
Desirable Skills
•    Knowledge of NTD epidemiology (especially Onchocerciasis and LF).
•    Experience working with mobile data collection tools.
•    GIS or mapping experience (e.g., QGIS) is an asset.
•    Working knowledge of local languages and cultural contexts in endemic areas.
