Job Title: General Practitioner (Clinical Services Lead)

Location: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Employment Type: Full-time

Reports to: Health Services Manager

Salary: Based on clinic cost-sharing model and experience

The Integrated Service on Health and Development Organization (ISHDO) is piloting an innovative cost-share clinic model in Addis Ababa to deliver affordable, high-quality health services. This initiative aims to enhance community well-being through exceptional customer care and accessible, patient-centered service provision. ISHDO is seeking a motivated, compassionate, and customer-oriented General Practitioner committed to improving patient satisfaction and clinical excellence.

The General Practitioner will provide high-quality, evidence-based primary care and lead the overall clinical service delivery at a medium-level cost-share clinic in Addis Ababa. The role includes providing standard clinical service, supervising medical and non-medical staff, ensuring compliance with national health standards, supporting health systems strengthening, and maintaining efficient and client-centered service provision. 

Duties & Responsibilities:

1. Clinical Duties

  • Deliver comprehensive clinical care, including consultation, diagnosis, treatment, and referral for common illnesses and injuries.

  • Ensure accurate and timely documentation of patient records in accordance with Ministry of Health (MOH) and clinic standards and codes.

  • Monitor and manage patients with chronic conditions and promote preventive care services.

  • Supervise and mentor nurses, laboratory technicians, and other clinical and non-clinical staff.

  • Ensure strict adherence to Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) protocols.

2. Clinical Leadership and Supervision

  • Lead day-to-day clinical operations, ensuring smooth patient flow and optimal resource utilization.

  • Contribute to the availability, development and implementation of clinical guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) (both national and specific).

  • Conduct regular clinical audits, case reviews, and continuous quality improvement activities.

  • Manage clinical staff scheduling to ensure adequate coverage at all times.

  • Ensure minimum regulatory standards are maintained 

3. Cost-Share and Resource Management

  • Monitor usage of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies to reduce wastage and ensure continuous availability.

  • Collaborate with clinic management to ensure cost-effective service delivery aligned with the cost-sharing model.

  • Support planning and forecasting of clinic needs, including medications, lab supplies, and equipment. 

  • Devise service promotion, demand creation and client enrollment schemes and follow the progress,

  • Design diversified clinical services based on the client’s types and needs.

4. Health Education and Community Linkages

  • Provide patient education and counseling on disease prevention, treatment adherence, and healthy living. Based on clients patterns, seasons, and prevalent cases,

  • Liaise with local health authorities, community structures, and implementing partners as necessary.

  • Participate in community outreach and public health campaigns initiated by the clinic.

  • Put in consideration of the cost-sharing clinic corporate social responsibility.

5. Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting

  • Support routine collection, analysis, and interpretation of clinical data for decision-making and performance tracking.

  • Submit timely reports to ISHDO and relevant health authorities. (DHIS2 and IDSR reports).

  • Uphold strict confidentiality and ethical standards in all aspects of clinical practice and patient interaction.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Medical Degree (MD) from an accredited institution.

  • Valid professional license and registration to practice in Ethiopia.

  • Minimum of 3 years post-internship clinical experience; prior experience in a private or medium-sized clinic is an asset.

  • Having a family medicine specialty training is a plus, 

  • Experience in cost-sharing or social enterprise healthcare models is a plus. 

  • Proven leadership or supervisory experience in clinical settings is highly desirable.

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong clinical decision-making and diagnostic skills.

  • Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, and team-building capacity.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Proficiency in both Amharic and English.

  • Experience with Electronic Medical Records (EMR) is an added advantage.

  • Familiarity with Ethiopia’s Essential Health Service Package and national treatment protocols.

  • Reputable skill and attitude towards evolving comprehensive and personalized care in holistic approach.

Working Conditions

  • The position is based in Addis Ababa, with occasional outreach or field-based activities.

  • Flexibility to work extended hours (weekends or evenings) as per clinic schedules and needs.
