Job Description

The Brooke is a leading UK equine welfare charity which has been working in Ethiopia since 2006 with a country office in Addis Ababa. The Brooke aims to improve the welfare of working equines, together with the livelihoods of people dependant on these animals. Brooke Ethiopia (B-Eth) is entering a new Strategic phase and by the year 2020, the Brooke Ethiopia will sustainably improve the equine welfare of some of the neediest rural and urban equines in Ethiopia.

Brooke’s work across Africa, Asia, and Latin America is transforming the lives of animals and people in the communities we serve. We are partway through our 2022-25 global strategy.

The Brooke has been working in Ethiopia since 2006 with a country office in Addis Ababa. The Brooke aims to improve the welfare of working equines, together with the livelihoods of people dependent on these animals. Currently, we are working in 4 regions and 5 veterinary teaching institutions, and with partnerships. 

Our vision is of a world in which working horses, donkeys, and mules are free from suffering and have a life worth living.

Our mission is to achieve immediate and lasting change to the lives of working horses, donkeys, and mules and the communities that depend on them.

Duties and Responsibilities

Overall management and coordination of the BE programme implementation in the regions, including:

1. Project management roles 

  • Planning:  defining results, assigning resources, and establishing an operational plan with the guidance of the CD and HOP

  • Organizing: determining functional structures, systems, and processes for efficient operations; staff are organized and aware of job responsibilities and expectations

  • Implementing: carrying out defined activities efficiently, effectively, and responsively in close collaboration with team leaders.

  • Ensure programs are implemented according to plans and budgets.

  • Monitoring and evaluating: continuously updating information to track the status of achievements and valuing results

  • Ensure that team leaders submit monthly, quarterly, and annual reports as per the set timeline.

  • Collate regular program reports and submit to the Head of Programmes

2. Leadership roles

  • Understand Internal and external stakeholders and support Brooke’s goals and mobilize resources to reach these goals.

  • Directly manage the Brooke Ethiopia team leaders, directing Brooke’s work by its defined mission,  strategy, and priorities

  • Led by the Head of Programme and Operations, to design individual plans for performance management and accountability.

  • Identify and provide capacity development of the field team as necessary through mentoring, targeted training, and other opportunities.

  • As a key member of the extended leadership team (ESLT), actively engage in the strategic leadership and decisions of the country programme.

  • Foster collaboration and build a spirited team. Recognize contributions of others and raise the profile and responsibility of team members.

  • Participate in the performance appraisal process of the team leaders

3. Stakeholder Relationships

  • Maintain smooth relationships with government stakeholders at regional, zonal, Woreda, and kebele levels in the best interest of our equines and their owning communities.

  • Keep a close relationship with our team leaders and communities through regular field visits and ensure they get the best possible services from Brooke programs.

  • Collaborate and communicate effectively with Brooke Ethiopia HOP and BE team on planning and milestone completion.

Job Requirements

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Master’s degree holder and above in a thematic area or related field, including rural development, agriculture, animal health, cooperative development, etc.

  • Formal education in two of Brooke’s thematic areas is preferred (CD and vet sciences).

  • A minimum of 8 years of senior professional experience in an international organization in integrated programs of rural livelihoods, cooperative development, and health sectors.

  • Experience in more than one thematic area is highly desired.

  • A demonstrated understanding of community development, poverty cycles in rural Ethiopia, and NGO program cycle management.

  • Fluency in English and Amharic is required.

  • Experience with being a part of a decision-making body within an international organization and demonstrated experience with balancing trade-offs to make difficult decisions.

  • Excellent interpersonal communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills required.

  • Organized with the ability to multitask and support other people under stressful conditions.
