Designation: Morgue Attendant

Reports to: Medical Director

The Morgue Attendant will be responsible for the respectful and dignified handling, storage, and preparation of deceased bodies in the hospital morgue. This role requires meticulous record-keeping, adherence to strict hygiene and safety protocols, and compassionate interaction with grieving families.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Operational Duties:

    • Receive deceased bodies from hospital wards or external sources, ensuring proper identification and documentation.

    • Prepare bodies for autopsy or viewing, including cleaning and dressing as required.

    • Assist the Pathologist during autopsies, handling instruments and specimens as directed.

    • Store bodies securely in refrigeration units, maintaining accurate records of location and duration.

    • Release bodies to authorized family members or funeral homes, ensuring all necessary paperwork is completed and verified.

    • Maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of the morgue facility, including refrigeration units, autopsy suite, and viewing rooms.

    • Properly dispose of medical waste generated in the morgue according to established protocols.

    • Adhere to strict infection control and safety procedures at all times.

  • Administrative Duties:

    • Maintain meticulous records of all bodies received, stored, and released.

    • Manage morgue supplies and report needs to the supervisor.

    • Communicate sensitively and professionally with grieving families, providing necessary information and support.

  • Other Duties as Required:

    • Assist in transporting bodies within the hospital.

    • Ensure compliance with local regulations regarding handling of deceased persons.

Job Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • Diploma in any medical field or equivalent.

  • Previous experience (at least 2 years) in a related field such as mortuary services, medical assisting, or healthcare support, preferably in a hospital setting.

  • Understanding of basic anatomy and medical terminology.

  • Ability to perform duties with sensitivity, respect, and discretion.

  • Strong adherence to hygiene, safety, and infection control protocols.

  • Good record-keeping and communication skills.

  • Physical ability to handle and move bodies with appropriate equipment
