Job Advert: Medical Physicist

Designation: Medical Physicist

Reports to: Head of Radiation Oncology / Head of Radiology Department

The Medical Physicist will be responsible for ensuring the safe and effective delivery of radiation therapy and diagnostic imaging services within the hospital. This role involves the application of physics principles to medical equipment, quality assurance, radiation safety, and collaboration with clinical teams to optimize patient treatment and diagnosis.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Radiation Therapy Physics (if applicable):

    • Perform calibration and quality assurance (QA) on linear accelerators, brachytherapy units, and other radiation therapy equipment.

    • Develop and verify patient treatment plans, calculating radiation doses and ensuring accurate targeting.

    • Oversee the safe handling and storage of radioactive sources.

    • Provide expert consultation to Radiation Oncologists on complex treatment planning and delivery.

  • Diagnostic Imaging Physics (if applicable):

    • Conduct routine QA and performance testing on diagnostic imaging equipment (e.g., X-ray, CT, MRI, Ultrasound, Mammography) to ensure optimal image quality and patient safety.

    • Assess and optimize imaging protocols to minimize patient radiation dose while maintaining diagnostic image quality.

    • Advise radiologists and technologists on technical aspects of imaging equipment.

  • Radiation Safety & Protection:

    • Develop, implement, and enforce radiation safety programs in accordance with national and international regulations.

    • Monitor radiation exposure for staff and patients, ensuring adherence to dose limits.

    • Conduct shielding design and radiation surveys for new or renovated facilities.

    • Provide expert advice on radiation protection measures.

  • Equipment Management & Commissioning:

    • Participate in the acceptance testing, commissioning, and periodic evaluation of new and existing medical physics equipment.

    • Troubleshoot equipment issues and collaborate with engineers for repairs and maintenance.

  • Research & Education:

    • Participate in clinical research related to medical physics and technology advancements.

    • Provide training and education to medical staff, residents, and technologists on radiation safety, equipment operation, and physics principles.

Job Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • Master's or Ph.D. degree in Medical Physics, Physics, or a closely related field from an accredited university.

  • Certification by a recognized board of medical physics (e.g., ABMP, IMPCB) or equivalent professional body is highly desirable.

  • Minimum of 3 years of demonstrable experience as a Medical Physicist in a clinical hospital setting, with experience in both radiation therapy and diagnostic imaging physics preferred.

  • Strong knowledge of radiation physics, dosimetry, radiation biology, and radiation safety regulations.

  • Proficiency in operating and performing QA on medical physics equipment (linear accelerators, diagnostic imaging modalities).

  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in Amharic and English.
