Job Description
Project Title: Oxygen Optimization Therapy through bCPAP (OoPT-bCPAP) for Management of Childhood Pneumonia in General Hospitals of LMICs
Duty Station: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
No required: 01(one)
Salary scale: As per institutional scale for the position
Reports to: Principal Investigator, Clinical Trial Directorate
Childhood pneumonia remains one of the leading causes of under-five mortality in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), with Nigeria and Ethiopia among the top five countries accounting for half of global deaths. Hypoxemia, a common complication, significantly increases the risk of mortality. The OPT-bCPAP project aims to scale up context-appropriate bubble continuous positive airway pressure (bCPAP) technology in high-burden settings (Nigeria, Ethiopia, Malawi) by leveraging positive results from trials conducted in Ethiopia, Bangladesh, and Ghana. In addition to scaling bCPAP, the project will investigate treatment failure and mortality factors, guideline adherence, healthcare-seeking behavior, respiratory syncytial virus burden, antimicrobial resistance, and antibiotic PK/PD to inform tailored treatment recommendations.
The Senior Implementation Researcher will lead and coordinate the Ethiopian arm of the OPT-bCPAP project. This includes overseeing the scale-up of bCPAP devices in general hospitals, ensuring adherence to research protocols, supervising field teams, conducting advanced data analysis, and contributing to high-impact publications. The role demands expertise in implementation research, pediatric respiratory care, and health systems in LMIC settings, with a proven track record of scientific productivity.
Lead the design, adaptation, and implementation of research protocols for bCPAP scale-up in Ethiopian hospitals.
Coordinate multi-site field operations, ensuring quality data collection and adherence to ethical standards.
Conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses on pneumonia outcomes, antimicrobial resistance, and health system factors.
Mentor junior researchers and facilitate capacity building within the project team.
Prepare technical reports, manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, and presentations for national and international forums.
Collaborate closely with local and international partners, policymakers, and hospital management to ensure uptake of findings.
Required Qualifications:
PhD in Health Sciences or related field with minimum 4 years research experience and 18 publication points, OR
