Project: LINDA-FAMILIA - Implementation of an Integrated Digital Health System for Infectious Diseases in Maternal and Child Health in East Africa

Duration: 4 year

Reports to: Project Manager, Postdocs, PhD fellows and PIs

The LINDA-FAMILIA project aims to implement a digital health information management system to enhance maternal and child health services across Ethiopia, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. The App Developer will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining a mobile application that supports the project’s objectives, as well as providing training and technical support to users.

Key Responsibilities:

1. App Development:

   • Design and develop a user-friendly mobile application of software tailored to the needs of healthcare providers and stakeholders involved in maternal and child health.

   • Collaborate with project stakeholders to gather requirements and ensure the app meets functional and technical specifications.

   • Implement best practices in mobile app development, including responsive design, security, and performance optimization.

2. System Integration:

   • Ensure seamless integration of the mobile app or software with existing digital health systems, electronic medical record (EMR) and databases, such as the DHIS2 platform.

   • Test the app thoroughly to identify and resolve any bugs or issues before deployment.

3. Training and Capacity Building:

   • Create comprehensive training materials, including user manuals, tutorials, and documentation to support app usage.

   • Conduct training sessions for healthcare professionals in particular with those who have close work with data and reporting system, stakeholders on how to effectively use the app and its features.

   • Provide ongoing support and guidance during the app rollout phase to ensure successful adoption.

4. Transition and Transfer:

   • Facilitate the transfer of the developed app to relevant health authorities and organizations, ensuring all technical and operational aspects are covered.

   • Assist in the setup and configuration of the app in the local health system environment.

5. Technical Support and Maintenance:

   • Monitor app performance and user feedback post-deployment, making necessary updates and improvements.

   • Provide technical support to users, addressing any issues or questions that arise during app usage.

   • Develop a maintenance plan for the app, ensuring it remains functional and relevant to user needs over time.

6. Collaboration and Communication:

   • Work closely with project teams, including researchers, public health professionals, and IT staff, to align app development with project objectives.

   • Participate in project meetings to report on progress, challenges, and user feedback.

7. Compliance and Security:

   • Ensure that the app complies with local and international data protection regulations and health standards.

   • Implement security measures to protect user data and maintain confidentiality.

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

• Education:

  • MSc degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mobile App Development, or a related field. A PhD degree is a plus.

• Experience:

  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in mobile app/sofeteware development, preferably in a health-related context.

  • Proven experience with programming languages and frameworks such as Java, Kotlin, Swift, React Native, or Flutter.

• Skills:

  • Strong understanding of mobile app development best practices, user experience (UX) design, and software development life cycle (SDLC).

  • Proficiency in database management and integration with APIs.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively train and support users.

Preferred Attributes:

• Familiarity with digital health technologies and systems, particularly in the context of maternal and child health.

• Experience working in low- and middle-income countries and understanding of the local health system is advantageous.

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

Additional Information:

• The position may require occasional travel within Ethiopia and to other project countries.
