Short description
The Project Agronomist plays a critical role in the planning, implementation, and monitoring of agronomic projects aimed at improving crop productivity and sustainability across the organization’s operational regions. Acting as a key technical contributor, the role combines field research, data analysis, and direct support to extension initiatives to ensure the successful deployment of agronomic innovations.
The incumbent will collaborate closely with agronomy teams, research institutions, and project stakeholders to apply scientific knowledge in practical settings. With a focus on impact and scalability, the Project Agronomist ensures that best practices in soil fertility, crop nutrition, and sustainable land management are effectively integrated into the company’s development and commercial initiatives.
Project Management
Lead the planning, coordination, and execution of agronomic projects from design through to delivery.
Develop detailed project workplans, schedules, and budgets to ensure timely and effective implementation.
Monitor project milestones, adjust timelines where needed, and ensure alignment with organizational objectives.
2. Field Research & Agronomic Trials
Design and conduct field experiments to evaluate crop management strategies and fertilizer innovations.
Collect, manage, and analyse agronomic data to support evidence-based recommendations.
Document research findings in detailed technical reports for internal and external dissemination.
3. Crop Management Expertise
Provide technical guidance on crop production practices including soil fertility, irrigation, pest and disease control, and crop rotation.
Monitor crop health and performance, identifying improvement areas and corrective actions.
Develop and implement integrated crop management plans focused on productivity, sustainability, and resilience.
4. Training & Capacity Building
Deliver training sessions and mentoring programs for field agronomists, extension agents, and farmers.
Develop practical tools and educational materials to build capacity in agronomic techniques.
Foster a culture of learning, innovation, and technical excellence within the agronomy team.
5. Strategic Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
Partner with universities, research institutes, and development agencies to advance shared agronomic research agendas.
Represent the organization at sectoral conferences, workshops, and industry events.
Cultivate strong working relationships with farmers, cooperatives, local authorities, and technical partners.
Compliance & Regulatory Oversight
Ensure all agronomic practices comply with national regulations, environmental standards, and health & safety guidelines.
Interface with regulatory bodies to maintain alignment with policies and obtain necessary clearances.
Budgeting & Resource Optimization
Contribute to the preparation and monitoring of agronomy-related budgets.
Track resource allocation, control project expenditures, and prepare financial reports.
Recommend corrective actions to optimize the use of human, material, and financial resources
Skills and Competencies
The ideal candidate for the position of Project Agronomist must demonstrate a strong combination of technical expertise, project management capabilities, and interpersonal effectiveness. A solid grounding in agronomic science is essential, particularly in areas such as soil fertility, crop nutrition, and sustainable farming practices. The ability to translate scientific knowledge into actionable field strategies is critical.
This role requires a strategic and analytical mindset, capable of designing and implementing field trials, interpreting agronomic data, and proposing evidence-based solutions. Strong planning and organizational skills are necessary to manage multiple projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, and deliver measurable results under varying conditions.
Effective communication and collaboration are key attributes, as the Project Agronomist will work closely with internal teams, farmers, researchers, and external stakeholders. The ability to train and build the technical capacity of junior staff and farming communities is highly valued. Moreover, adaptability and resilience are essential traits in managing agricultural interventions across diverse agro-ecological zones.
Finally, a results-oriented attitude, attention to detail, and a commitment to continuous improvement are critical to success in this role, along with proficiency in digital tools and agronomic information systems
Qualification and Experience
A Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Crop Science, or a related agricultural field is required. A Master’s degree or relevant professional certification (such as Certified Crop Advisor) is considered a strong asset.
A minimum of 5 to 7 years of proven experience in agronomy or related functions, ideally within the agricultural development or commercial farming sector.
Solid expertise in agronomic principles, crop production systems, and sustainable agricultural practices across diverse environments.
Demonstrated ability in data analysis, agronomic research, and evidence-based problem-solving.
Proficiency in using agronomic software and digital tools to support planning, monitoring, and decision-making.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the capacity to engage effectively across multidisciplinary teams and stakeholder groups.
High level of adaptability and organizational agility, capable of managing multiple priorities in fast-paced and evolving field contexts
