farmer productivity, optimizing input use, and promoting environmentally responsible farming systems. The Senior Agronomist plays a key role in leading field trials, validating agronomic models, and supporting the deployment of science-based solutions across the organization’s operational regions.
The Senior Agronomist provides advanced technical expertise in soil fertility, crop management, and sustainable agricultural practices to support the implementation of organization’s agronomic initiatives. This role combines strategic fieldwork with advisory and technical support, contributing directly to the success of programs aimed at improving
Design, coordinate, and implement field trials to evaluate fertilizer products and validate agronomic recommendations.
Develop crop-specific fertilizer recommendations based on soil analysis, local agronomic conditions, and crop performance data.
Lead the standardization of field protocols and contribute to the creation of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for agronomic activities.
Supervise and support the activities of field agronomists and technical officers, ensuring alignment with program objectives and timelines.
Prepare annual agronomic work plans, including activity schedules, budgets, and performance indicators.
Coordinate and maintain accurate records of all soil sampling, analysis, and fertilizer recommendation efforts across projects.
Contribute to the development and review of new fertilizer formulations in collaboration with technical teams.
Lead the design and delivery of technical training sessions for junior agronomists and field teams.
Produce technical training materials and documentation to support knowledge transfer and capacity building.
Collect, analyze, and interpret agronomic data to support decision-making and continuous improvement of field programs.
Document research results and prepare comprehensive technical reports for internal and external stakeholders.
stablish and coordinate research partnerships with universities, research institutes, and development organizations.
Participate in proposal development, technical documentation, and reporting activities in alignment with the organization’s strategic objectives.
Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness and impact of agronomic programs and propose corrective actions when needed.
Represent the organization in technical meetings, research review sessions, and sectoral workshops at national and regional levels.
Organize and lead regular in-house training workshops for agronomy teams to foster professional development.
Attend external conferences and knowledge-sharing events to maintain technical leadership and promote institutional collaboration.
Provide technical support to regional and global agronomic initiatives led by the organization across its network
Skills and competencies
The Senior Agronomist must demonstrate strong technical proficiency in crop production, soil fertility management, and sustainable agricultural practices. A solid understanding of agronomic science, combined with the ability to translate research and field data into practical, scalable solutions, is essential. The role requires the capacity to design and manage field trials, analyze results rigorously, and adapt recommendations to diverse agro-ecological contexts.
In addition to technical expertise, the Senior Agronomist must possess excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and generate actionable insights. Proficiency in agronomic software, data collection tools, and digital platforms is increasingly important to support evidence-based decision-making.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills are also critical for this role, as it involves collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, field staff, external partners, and farmer communities. The ability to mentor junior team members and provide clear technical guidance is expected.
The position requires adaptability, initiative, and a results-oriented mindset, particularly in dynamic environments where priorities may shift rapidly. Academic Background:
Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Crop Science, Soil Science, or a closely related field is required.
A Master’s degree or a recognized professional certification (e.g., Certified Crop Advisor – CCA, or equivalent) is considered a strong asset.
Professional Experience:
Minimum of 8 to 10 years of progressive experience in agronomy, field research, crop management, or agricultural advisory roles, preferably within a multinational, development-oriented, or agribusiness context.
Experience in coordinating field teams, managing trials, and working directly with farmers or cooperatives is highly valued.
Technical Proficiency:
Strong applied knowledge of agronomic principles, soil fertility management, crop nutrition, and sustainable agricultural practices.
Familiarity with agronomic data analysis tools, GIS-based platforms, or precision agriculture solutions is preferred.
Soft Skills
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret data and translate insights into actionable field interventions.
Effective communicator with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate across teams, institutions, and geographies.
Proven ability to operate in dynamic, multi-stakeholder environments and manage multiple priorities with autonomy and structure.
Languages:
Fluency in English is required; working knowledge of French is an advantage.
Knowledge of local or regional languages is a plus, depending on deployment context.
Mobility:
Willingness to travel frequently to field locations as needed.
