Job Description
Médecins Sans Frontières (also known as Doctors without Borders or MSF) is a private, non-profit, international humanitarian medical organization that intervenes in emergencies and crises situations to relieve human suffering resulting from unmet medical needs. MSF observes strict neutrality with respect to politics and provides its assistance without discriminating on the bases of race, religion, ideology, or political affiliation. MSF’s members are required to respect humanitarian principles and principles of medical ethics at all times.
MSF-Holland in Ethiopia currently operates in five projects (North Gonder, Abdurafi project, in Tigray North West projects (Shire and Sheraro), in Somali region- Wardher project, in Gambella region; Kule project with diversified workforce.
Provide outpatient and/or inpatient medical care to patients/beneficiaries according to adapted and updated medical knowledge, MSF protocols, values and universal hygiene standards to improve the patients/beneficiaries health conditions.
Accountabilities
Apply medical knowledge and skills to diagnose and prevention. Carry out outpatient and inpatient consultations, prescribing the necessary treatment respecting MSF protocols.
Keep the patient and/or his/her family informed about the illness and provide appropriate explanations about the treatment to follow, checking they have understood.
Follow up the evolution of the hospitalized/IDP patients, through daily visits, consultations and examinations, prescribing the necessary treatment following MSF protocols, deciding whether they can be discharged or transferred to other departments – in collaboration with other doctors- and informing their family about the patient’s evolution.
Check and control the rational distribution of medicines and equipment under his/her responsibility and take care the quality, disinfection and sterilization of the medical material. Assure general compliance with standing hygiene standards.
Participate in the collection and analysis of epidemiological data, checking its validity and informing the line manager or project coordinator about any problem or complication of the patients illness, medical error and monitors the proper functioning of the department, equipment or material.
Ensure ongoing training of the medical/paramedical multidisciplinary team in order to optimize the quality of care.
Knows and ensures all MSF medical protocols are followed and implemented, checking universal precautions are followed at all times and reducing bio-hazard risks and improving infection control. Ensures professional confidentiality is respected.
Manage the team under his/her direct responsibility according to MSF HR policies and procedures, supervising their performance, organizing and scheduling shifts and rotations, directly participating in emergencies and on calls if necessary.
MSF Section/Context-Specific Accountabilities
Provide medical care to MSF staff according to the MSF National Staff Health policy for Ethiopia, including undertaking medical consultations for MSF staff who require primary health care.
Weekly check of line lists provided by Designated Medical Institutions (health care providers with whom MSF has an agreement to provide medical care to staff) of the patients they have treated, and compare this to lists of eligible staff and their dependents.
Scrutinizing health care bills, and ensure that the care provided falls within the coverage of the MSF National Staff Health policy.
Evaluating whether recommendations for referral to specialists/higher level care made by Designated Medical Institutions are indicated.
Evaluate sick leave certificates, and where necessary seeking a second opinion.
Ensure proper sick leave procedure amongst MSF staff.
Escalating complex cases to medical activity manager, and where necessary the project Medical referent.
Provide direct medical care to neonates admitted to the NICU, including assessment, diagnosis, and management of common neonatal conditions (e.g., sepsis, prematurity, low birth weight, neonatal jaundice, and birth asphyxia).
Ensure adherence to MSF neonatal care protocols, including infection prevention and control.
Participate in mortality and morbidity reviews and contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives within the NICU.
Ensure referral patients and patients at NTD (specifically kalazar, snakebite and rabies) ward receive adequate and quality health care in the project.
Collaborate closely with hospital doctors, conducting regular rounds to assess patient progress, monitor treatment adherence, and adjust treatment plans as needed to ensure optimal outcomes.
Identify and report any medical incidents, near misses, or adverse events to the medical activity manager and other relevant stakeholders, contributing to continuous quality improvement efforts.
Receive and review referrals from the mobile team, assessing patient needs and ensuring that they receive appropriate medical care and treatment at maiani hospital
Facilitating health promotion activities and practices to keep our workforce healthy.
Accurate medical record keeping, and ensuring medical information remains confidential.
Provide quality primary health care including taking a proper medical history, performing a correct physical examination, accurately diagnosing illness, and knowing when referrals for further investigations are indicated.
Familiarity with all aspects of comprehensive OPD care including malnutrition, maternal health & family planning, SGBV care, mental health and NCD.
Providing Psychological first aid, and recognizing when additional mental health support is required.
Rational prescribing of medical supply.
In cases of emergency, carrying out first aid care.
Providing treatment according to MSF guidelines and protocols.
Knowing and implementing Patient Therapeutic Education (PTE), i.e. keeping contact with all patients, providing them information regarding their health state and responding to their questions.
Recognizing communicable diseases with outbreak potential, reporting them immediately to the clinic supervisors, and completing line lists.
Responding to outbreaks as required, for example cholera response.
Participating in trainings.
Place of work: Tigray North west Project based in Sheraro
Terms of employment: Until 31 December 2025 with possibility of extension.
Remuneration and Benefits:
Starting gross salary : USD 1,509 (One Thousand Five Hundred Nine US Dollars) payable in Ethiopian Birr

Education
Essential: Medical Doctor degree
Desirable : diploma in Tropical Medicine, or post-graduation experience in public health, infectious disease , HIV/TB, ,minor surgery
Experience
Essential : minimum 2 years’ experience as a medical doctor in clinical work
Desirable: working experience in MSF or other NGO. Experience in tropical medicine, or post-registration experience in Public Health, pediatrics, infectious diseases, HIV/AIDS/STDs, general practice, general medicine or minor surgery.
Languages
