Ethiopia is undergoing a major economic transformation — shifting from a state-led to a market-oriented system that empowers the private sector to drive growth, create jobs, and build resilience. To support this transition, GIZ’s Private Sector Development Programme (PSD-E) works hand in hand with government institutions, private enterprises, and innovative start-ups to strengthen competitiveness and foster inclusive, sustainable growth.
The project takes a bottom-up approach, addressing concrete business challenges while supporting systemic reforms. Its focus areas include:
Duties & Responsibilities:
Enterprise Development: Supporting growth-oriented companies and start-ups to improve operations, quality, and access to finance and markets.
Business Environment Reform: Enhancing efficiency and transparency in customs, tax administration, and financial regulation to make Ethiopia more business-friendly.
Resilience Building: Empowering especially women-led MSMEs in (post-)conflict regions through training, advisory support, and improved credit access.
Through these efforts, PSD-E contributes to a more competitive and resilient Ethiopian private sector that drives the country’s economic transformation forward.

Job Description
Technical and thematic support
Support the design and implementation of activities related to private sector competitiveness and MSME development.
Contribute to the preparation of concepts, background papers, and presentations on topics such as business environment reform, enterprise upgrading, and women’s economic empowerment.
Assist in identifying and engaging partner institutions (e.g., government bodies, business associations, start-ups) and help organize joint initiatives.
Support the collection and analysis of data and evidence to monitor progress and identify challenges in private sector transformation.
Contribute to the design and implementation of trainings, workshops, and capacity development measures for public and private partners.
Project Management and Coordination
Support the planning, coordination, and monitoring of project activities under the guidance of senior advisors and the component manager.
Assist in the preparation of annual operational plans, budget inputs, and activity updates.
Support procurement and contracting processes, including drafting ToRs, reviewing deliverables, and coordinating with consultants or service providers.
Help organize partner meetings, field missions, and steering committee sessions, including documentation and follow-up.
Maintain and update project documentation, files, and knowledge databases in line with GIZ standards.
Communication and Reporting
Contribute to internal and external communication, including drafting project briefs, success stories, and visibility materials.
Assist in preparing progress reports, meeting minutes, and presentations for internal and donor reporting.
Support coordination with other GIZ projects, the EU, and development partners to ensure synergies and knowledge exchange.
Job Requirements
Qualifications
Education Background: BA Degree in Economics, Development Economics, Business Administration, Management, Entrepreneurship, Public Policy, Public Administration, International Development Project management course are advantages.
Experience: 0 to 2 years working experience.
Private Sector Understanding: Good knowledge about Ethiopia’s private sector is an advantage.
Communication skills: Excellent communication skills, verbal and written; proven track record of drafting and editing documents is required
Language Proficiency: Fluence in both written and spoken business English and Amharic.
Synthesizing information: Ability to quickly understand instructions, ask for clarification when needed, adapt and work independently to produce results on time
Intercultural Competence: Ability/motivation to work in a multi-cultural work environment.
Technical Skills: Good knowledge of standard MS Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
