Since its creation in 2009, ALIMA has treated more than 13 million patients and today deploys its operations in 14 countries. In 2023, ALIMA cared for 2.8 million patients, including over a million children under the age of 5, received 157,393 people for mental health consultations, assisted 67,617 births, carried out 64 projects in 14 countries. Whenever possible, we work in partnership with local NGOs to ensure that our patients benefit from the best and most relevant expertise wherever it is, whether within their own country or in the rest of the world. In addition, to improve the humanitarian response, we are carrying out operational and clinical research projects, particularly in the field of the fight against malnutrition and viral hemorrhagic fevers.

 

ALIMA’S TEAM: more than 2000 people are currently working for ALIMA. The field teams, closest to the patients, receive their support from coordination teams generally based in the countries’ capitals. These receive support from the 4 desk teams and the emergency and opening team based at the operational headquarters in Dakar, Senegal. The Paris and New York teams are actively working to raise funds and represent ALIMA. The rest of the ALIMA Galaxy includes individuals and partner teams working on behalf of other organizations such as medical NGOs BEFEN, ALERT Health, SOS Doctors / KEOGO, AMCP, research organizations PACCI, and INSERM, Bordeaux or Copenhagen Universities, the INGO Solidarités International, and many others.

ALIMA IN ETHIOPIA

ALIMA has been operating in Ethiopia since 2022, providing healthcare, nutrition, and emergency response in regions affected by conflict, instability, and climate-related crises.

The organization initially focused on the Afder zone in the Somali Region, where limited healthcare infrastructure and recurring droughts have led to severe malnutrition and a shortage of medical personnel. ALIMA delivered integrated health and nutrition services to support vulnerable communities in Hargele, Elkare and Barey woredas. This ECHO funded project was closed at the end of the funding cycle in October 2024.

In 2024, ALIMA expanded its work to the Tigray region, which had been heavily impacted by instability and conflict. The organization is implementing a CDCS funded program addressing healthcare, nutrition, sexual and reproductive health, gender-based violence, and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) in targeted woredas. A base has been established in Mekele, and activities are being rolled out to improve access to essential services for affected populations.

To ensure continuity and scale up its impact, ALIMA has also proposed to ECHO an extension of its programs in both Afder and Tigray, aiming to strengthen healthcare systems, enhance nutrition support, and improve overall community resilience.

LOCATION OF POSITION: Somali region, Afder Zone, Woreda: Elkare and Hargele 

FUNCTIONAL AND HIERARCHICAL LINKS

He/she reports to the Midwife supervisor

She/He collaborates and interacts with activities supervisors (MHPSS, OPD, IPD, …) , Health workers for the mobile team and the logistic team, as well as with the entire ALIMA team and its partners.

PROTECTION OF BENEFICIARIES AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS

Level 3: As part of his/her duties, the incumbent will visit programs and come into contact with children and/or vulnerable adults. Therefore, a criminal record check or a certificate of good character will be required. In situations where a criminal record check or character reference is not possible, a declaration of honor will be requested.

MISSION AND MAIN ACTIVITIES

Provide obstetrical care to pregnant women and their babies as per SRH package of MHNT, doing follow up before, during and after delivery, according to National and ALIMA obstetrical and reproductive health protocols, universal hygienic and newborn caring standards in order to improve the basic preventive health care at community level in line with public health emergency management with emphasis especially preventing maternal and newborn deaths.

  • Ensuring the implementation and continuity of antenatal and postnatal care, family planning, obstetrical care (BEmONC 1), neonatal and comprehensive abortion care, management of victims of sexual violence, reproductive tract infections, in accordance with SRH package of MHNT and reinforce the implementation of standardized protocols. 

  • Collaborating with the MHNT nurse in the management of Sexual Violence cases 

  • Assessing the feasibility for referral of pregnant women from the NEH/TBAs to the OPD/MCH for medical evaluation and/or complicated deliveries. 

  • Ensuring hygiene and sterilization criteria (including universal precautions) are met according to ALIMA specifications. 

  • Performing cleaning and minor maintenance for biomedical equipment used. Following the user manual and protocols and alert supervisor in case of malfunctioning.

  • Guaranteeing a regular and ongoing supply of drugs and equipment required for SRH activities (including monitoring/consumption control/ordering of orders) in collaboration with the MHNT nurse

  • Ensuring patients’ right to privacy and confidentiality is respected 

  • According to ALIMA protocols in force, conduct normal deliveries independently when referral to a health facility is not possible.

  • Manage obstetric emergencies; identify cases needing referral and send them in time, detecting possible anomalies/infections of the newborn and reporting them to the nurse, in order to ensure successful interventions 

  • Train and support SRH staff of supported Health facilities, NEH, CHWs and HEWs on how to provide quality maternal and child health services.

  • In supported Health facilities, supervises the use of drugs, facilities and obstetric material, in order to ensure, in accordance with number of patients and prescriptions, a rational use as well as pharmacy stock levels are permanently updated, kept under appropriate conditions and above minimum safety point. 

  • Strengthening of linkages and coordination mechanisms between community and the health facilities, collaborate with HP and HC responsible and personnel while organizing MHNTs activities in their areas

  • Train and support community-based volunteer health workers for the implementation of the community component of the project

  • In close collaboration with MHNT nurse and logistic teams, organizing all logistic needs of the MHNT

  • Under supervision of the Nurse supervisor, the SRH manager and the project coordination team, identifying population in need and setting the schedule for MHNT activities

  • In collaboration with community activity supervisor (and the community volunteers: NEH, CEW) and the project coordination team, involving HP/HC responsible and community leaders in the MHNT activity and ensuring targeted population is aware of the MHNT schedule

  • Ensuring proper and timely data collection and prepares the monthly SRH activity report.

CONDITIONS

Contract term:

  • Contract term: 10 months (renewable, based on funding availability and performance)

Job Requirements

Training / Education: 

College Diploma/Degree in midwifery and with valid registration/practicing license

Experiences: 

  • Working experience in clinical activity and MHNT of at least 2 years for degree holders and 4 years for Diploma. 

  • NGO experience in the field is preferred.

  • Experienced working at the primary health care unit (Health centers) at the MCH department and labor wards.

  • Proven training facilitation experience and skills, 

  • Relevant experience in performing clinical procedures (assisted delivery and others) 

Languages spoken by the candidate 

  • Oral and written fluency in English is essential

  • Proficiency in the local language; Somali is mandatory
